Fuel pump, or what?!!??!

whast the problem with my 89 cherokee. i was drivin on the highway last night and it started to sputter and almost stall. it seemed like the fuel filter was the problem.. but i replaced that and the air filter and it will still continue to sputter.so bad that it won't really go anyware and stall frequently. it will start, then it will idle down and shut off .. this takes about 4-8 seconds before the jeep will shut off. the fuel pump changes tone when getting ready to start also.. its more of a lower varying sound than before the problem. i am assuming its the fuel pump.. but i checked on the fuel rail i think.. when the pump was engaged but the vehicle wasn't started, i pushed the pin and gas spayed out like a WD-40 can. not sure what to think help out please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! e-mail me [email protected]
