I have a 98 Jeep Cherokee Sport with about 75k on it 4L auto. there is an intermittent pop (sounds like it is coming from the front of the vehicle) I have checked and had everything underneath checked and there is no obvious cause. It doesn't seem to matter whether it is in 2 wd or 4wd HELP

Hay Terryd, I had the simular problem with my 00" XJ. It was later found to be the track bar was bad. It "looked" fine. But once it was replaced the "cracking sound" went away. Also, does it happen more when your turning? If so look at your U-jionts in the front axles. Mine are due for changing at 86k.

My 95 has the same noise, I was told by a experienced Jeep Cherokee guy that the track bar is usually the problem. It looks ok feels ok, just at certain times when I turn the vehicle, you would hear a crack!.

Yup, that sounds right. You figure, the track bar has the most stress on it when your turning, so if there is anything wrong, it would show up then.

I Have The Same Problem With My 98 Cherokee. Fortunately I Have Been Able To Locate The Exact Source. The Bottom Bracket On The Transfer Case Mode Selector Lever Has Wallowed Out Where The Rod Connects To The Bracket On The Body. When Put Into Gear In 2wd Or 4wd The Engine Vibrations And Drivetrain Movement Cause The Rod To Shake Around Sounding Somewhat Like An Empty Soup Can Rolling Around In The Torque Converter. I Don't Quite Know If There Is Supposed To Be A Grommet There Or Not. I Fixed The Noise With Electircal Tape And Have'nt Heard It Since. The Noise Is Really Annoying And Can Ultimatly Cause The Transfer Case Selestor Shaft Seal To Fail Resulting In A Near Total Fluid Loss
