I am new to this whole thing, I have a '01 5.3 and wanted to know where this is and if removed, what kind of effect will this have in the long run on my truck?

The mass air flow sensor...you gotta have it for the truck to run worth a crap....Just leave it alone and everything will be fine :)

I know what it is, I was referring to people taking the screen off, my bad, a lack of communication.

Some advice: If you don't know what someone is talking about, just don't post anything, then you won't make yourself look stupid.
As far as the MAF goes, don't do anything to it, my friend messed with it and his truck lost gas mileage, and ran terribly (almost DIDN'T run). So he put it back in after a couple days or so and it fixed the problem... just leave it alone, you're not going to accomplish anything by removing it.

First of all no one ever learns anything by keeping quiet in a setting like this, you have to ask questions if you dont know. As far as looking stupid I could care less. I appreciate your reply and will take your advice.

And another thing... what exactly were you trying to accomplish by removing the screen?? Just wondering, maybe i (or someone else) can recommend a better modification. :)

I havent done anything as of yet just wanted a better understanding of why someone would remove the screen? No further explanation needed. But yes I guess if anyone out there has any good ideas where to start with making modifications to my '01 5.3L with 3.73 gears I am all ears.

Removal of the screen in the maf is supposed to allow for more air flow into the engine. I removed the screen in my 99 5.3 however I didn't notice any difference in performance. Several people had problems with their engines after removing it. If you feel like you must take it out be careful not to damage the wires in the maf or you'll have to buy a new one. The screen just pops out so use something like a wooden dowel to tap it out with.

Haha, did you mean for that to rhyme...? Okay, well don't mean to tell you what to do with your truck, but i would suggest getting a cold air intake, and exhaust. (*Cold air intake is like the safe and "guaranteed to work" way of removing the screen. Do this instead. I mean, all you're doing when removing the screen is trying to increase air intake into the engine.) I think that's a good place to start. I would also recommend doing some exterior and interior custom work. Interior: seat covers ( www.wetokole.com these are the best seat covers ever!!) you can get custom carpeting or floor mats, get aftermarket speakers (diamonds are good) and a deck. Exterior: clear corner headlights, euro or other style tail lights, debadge and remove door panneling. There's a lot of other things you can do also but i think those are good starts. Hope that's of some help, Good Luck!!

Kmoss, look in the thread "5.3L gas milage", there's some guys there that have improved their MPG by removing the MAF screen and getting a new exhaust. Looks like it worked for them. If your truck starts running funny just put the MAF screen back on, if it still runs funny then reset the computer, no problem. Definitely worth a try. Good luck.
