I have a 95 with an AX4N trans. It did the same thing. Fluid level is very high on the stick, almost 1/2 way up. Most logical explination I've found so far is pump relief valve stuck open, which let the converter drain. Why did the relief open and stick there? My guess is someting came apart. Pump is so deep in, it's a waste of time to go after.

Is this fixable or better off with a used one?

its fixable if you know how to take apart transmissions, a used one would probably be easier though

The fluid level is halfway up the stick....several shops have said either the pump died or the pump drive shaft broke. If it is the pump can it be fixed without an entire rebuild?

No. The pump is the last peice to come out of the trans when it is completely disassembled. Sorry.
