Gooey Steering Wheel

I have a 1992 Ranger STX with the leather steering wheel like was found on the Explorers of that vintage. Over the past twelve years of Alabama summers the foam under the steering wheel has turned to goo.
Has anyone experienced this problem and if so how did you address it? This part is no longer available from Ford so buying a replacement has proven impossible. Does anyone know if there are any companies that will rebuild the padding under the steering wheel and apply a new leather cover?

I wore a hole in my steering wheel cover, so I took a razor blade and cut the damn thing off. Then I went to an auto parts store and bought a slip on steering wheel cover. Looks and feels good.
