Water Polishing.....?

Okay, the other day someone i know was talking about this technique of getting rid of small imperfections in the paint. He said you take a piece of 2000 grit sand paper and wet it, then you gently polish away the imperfection, while keeping the surface wet. He said it takes a long time and you have to be patient. Has anybody tried this? Or even heard of it? Im kinda afraid to try it, i don't want to make a tiny imperfection worse. Replies are much appreciated!

Yeah, I've tried it and it works great. I used 600 grit wetsand paper and Mother's spray wax. Just dip the sandpaper in water to get it really wet then spray the wax over the spot and start out rubbing gently, you'll get the hang of it. If you don't want to use Mother's, hold a garden hose on low flow above the spot to keep it wet while you sand. What you're sanding is the clearcoat, if you don't have clearcoat then this won't work. What kind of spot are you trying to get rid of? A clay bar or polishing compound may be best.

Im trying to get rid of a chip in the paint... i donno, it's kind of like someone dented me with their door. But how does it get rid of the imperfection? Like, does it cover it with the existing paint surrounding it or is it still gonna look chipped??

Water polishing won't work for your dent. Water polishing will help with shallow scratches and dull finishes, not chips. I absolutely hate dings, not much you can do to make them look better. If you've picked up somebody else's paint then a clay bar will get it off, but if your paint was chipped about the only thing you can do is get touch up paint or professional paint work. Sorry.

you can wet sand best with 1500 grit, and use 3M rubbing compound to rub out the sand marks. Then touch up the chip the best you can. Good Luck!
