car seems to miss fire !

When you first put the car into reverse after starting the car and press on the gas lightly the car seems to miss fire a few times and then gets going. This happens both when you move the car into drive or reverse. The funny thing about all this is that it happens only after the car has been sitting for a few hours, and is aggravated with the airconditioning on. I have also noticed at highway speeds you can feel the car miss once and awhile. I have repalced the spark plugs and I am on top of my regular maint. I am thinking it might be asign my fuel pump is about to go or bad spark plug wires.

If anyone has any adive please pass it on .

check your battery voltage if low 11.0volt maybe that is problem try new battery,

I too have the same problem with my car. I checked the battery and it sits at 12.5Vdc and 14 when running. Do I assume its my spark plug and wires? Doeas any one know the resistance I should be seeing on my cables?

What year and model of Esteem do you have? And what sized engine?

I have a 99 Esteen 1.6 liter Sedan, I'll check mine tomorrow if it ever stops raining here. Two of them are not testable as they are molded into the ignition coil(s).

I wouldn't think it would be the wires or it would probably do it all the time. You might have an ignition coil going out or (I'm not sure if this car has one) the crank sensor might be going out also.

Sorry Lilgrey, I have not had a chance to check my spark plug wires, the weather here has been horrible. Considering the short lengths of the wires and the fact that they have no room to wobble around they are probably not your problem.

Your electrical system is doing exactly what it is supposed to do, it should read 12.8 volts right after you turn the engine off and then slowly drop to around 12.5 volts. While the engine is running it should be somewhere around 14 volts, it will vary depending on if the engine is at idle or wound up over 2,000 RPMs.


Sktanega, almost any car in the USA that was made after around 1984 does not have a carburettor. The Esteem family did not come around until the mid 1990's and all came with fuel injected engines.
