'96 MX6 error codes

Have a '96 Mazda MX6 with the check engine light one constantly. I know with my other cars (different make/model) I can get the error codes off by turning the ignition on and off a certain number of times. Is there any way to do this with the MX6 or do you need a scanner / have to take it to a garage?

Thanks!!

disconect the battery for like 15 sec or take it to your auto-part store and they can do it for you for free

Now I hope your 96 is still OBD-I

I believe The 1996 Mx6 is OBDII if it was OBDI you could read codes with the Hold light (see MX6 .com )

If you have an Autozone in your area they will read codes for free
You can get a code reader on E-bay but check closely to make sure they will work for your car

You can check the transmission codes with the hold light and the engine with the check engine light. (as for ODB-II agreed 96's are (but some sold were built in 95)

If you are just trying to shut off the light, you should be able to by disconnecting the battery and stepping on the brake for 5 sec. That's how I reset them on my 94 mx6. Also, you can usually check the codes yourself by jumpering two terminals in the OBDI reader. If you have OBDII, which I think you do, you will need a code reader to clear the codes (I believe).

on the obdII the error codes are saved until you clear the codes disconecting the battery wont do that you need the code reader for that
