i found a Silver Penny and i was wondering how much it was worth. i know if its a counterfeit it wouldnt be worth anything; but if its a real defect coin, couldnt it be worth alot of money? i talked to this guy and he was looking at it and said that the rim of the coin on one half of the coin dissapeared, which is a defect and would make it worth even more money. If you have any knowlage on the subject pleaze post it. Also the year is i think in the 1990s.

Silver (Steel) Penny's aren't extremely rare, I come by them occasionally. But its something you'd want to keep for the future.

As to how much they're worth....

A penny. ;)

A chemistry class when i was in high school plated pennies in silver/nickel and Gold/brass. They mailed them to deployed troops someplace in 2001.

Post pics of it and I'll be able to tell you whether it's real or not.

Yeah I did that for my chemistry class as well. I forget the chemicals you use, but you just soak pennies in them and set them ablaze.

It's real, 1941-43 or some where in that time frame for 3 years they made Steele pennies, it's not silver. The reason they done that was becasue copper was being used for bullets.

They are not worth that much, you can get all 3 years all mint marks for about 5 dollars, in near mint condition.

If it is some other year than that, like mid 70's or something then you might have a error penny?

They were actually steel, but they had a zinc coating.

i know that every now and again the mint produces proof sets in silver gold or platinum. that may just be a penny from one of those, although i can't imagine anyone being dumb enough to remove them from the packaging.

You might be right, but we have to wait until he decides to return and post pics. I kinda doubt that it would be from a proof set, though, as I can't imagine someone stupid enough to remove one from a proof set, either. I used to be really into collecting coins and the like, but I slowed down. I have at least $600-700 worth (book value, not face) in my room now, and about $4500 worth packed away in a safe. I'll post pics of what I have thats not in the safe later on.

Nope. Even though very few were made, their not worth more than maybe a million each. That's book value though, don't know what one would go for at auction.

Um, for something with an intended value of 1 cent, I think $1,000,000 is quite possiby the cost of one's soul.

Then said person must not think of theirself as being worth a whole lot. I think of it like a poker game where the soul is the overall prize. A million dollars would be like the ante.

Well since i asked you the first time, and since i wrote it, i guess i can't find it, that is why i was asking you what you disagree with it? Is there something wrong with what i wrote? am i not in the correct time frame?

The guy said the penny was from the 1990's - not a Steel penny of the forties like you suggested, or a error from the 70's.
