its a great car! as long as you maintain it religiously and tune your car to support your upgrades, you shouldn't have a problem. people sometimes complaing about them breaking down a lot but those are the people that don't take care of them (usually). there are a few things that are more difficult to do in the mr2 than in other cars but for the most part, its not too bad. when i bought mine i thought it would be a huge pain to do anything on but its really not that bad. check out mr2oc.com, there's a TON of info there and a bunch of people who really know their stuff!

they're a toyota so they REALLY aren't going to break. They are mid engined so there some finneky bits to them... like the cooling system. Some parts can be hard to get to so that can mean extra hours in labour but most of the mechanical parts are shared with other toyota family models so aren't going to be too expensive. I'd say geta turbo timer and use good oil... but some people might not agree.

The MKII NAs use the camry 5sfe motor, which can commonly hit 250,000 miles.

The 3sgte is also a fine powerplant. Toyota builds their cars well.

i know the turbo uses an E153 gearbox, also from the camry so the n/a probably does too. n/a's over this way used a 3s-ge. the mk1's used a 4a-ge out of the corolla and they are just about indestructable too!

the na's use the s54 tranny. the trannies are good except for the tendency for the syncros to wear out. but as long as you use pennzoil or gm synchromesh tranny fluid, there won't be any problems.
