ok a friend of mine had recently sent his 98' ss camaro to MTI for an all out overhaul this includes, over 500 hp 427 bored and stroked, complete exhaust headers back, heavu duty suspension, stiffer anti sway bars, huge ass brakes etc.
he was told by mti that it WILL burn oil (which it has been)becuase they set up the rings loose so it can turn over high rpms, BUT for some reason its been swallowing water, and we cant figure out why the overhaul only has 300mi on it and was completed less than a month ago, my dad suspects its the overflow can not returning the water back to the radiator but we havnt checked that yet.we also know there isnt any coolant in the oil.
anyone have any ideas on what could causing this, or how to fix it??

take it back and have them look at it. If it was jsut built and is doing this, they need to back it up. If they don't then you can nab them in court, that is if your buddy did not sign a release paper saying otherwise.

you check the oil for water, it would really suck if a head gasket was fouled cause they accidentally under/over torqued a head bolt or something...

MTI offers a 2 year warranty with that package.....
I would check the coolant crossover hose myself, sometimes they leak if not reinstalled properly. Had 3 friends that had heads/cam on an LS1 that had that problem.

yeah thanks guys, he contacted mti and they sent him some additive, doubt that will make a diffrerence but, whatever, he may end up sending it back there but the problem is mti is out of houston so shipping is problem hopefully he can get them to pay for it.

i think this is a GM additive. the dealership gave me some when i changed the intake gasket on my sister's grand am. it's a a couple pellets that you crush and add to your coolant. newer engines have crossover tubes with o'rings that like to leak

hell, if i sent my car away to some company that was supposed to make it awsome and i got it back not working, they sure as hell would be paying for shipping. if they didnt, i would be on the phone in a second making sure they paid for shipping...

for the $17k they charge for the 427 package (installed), they better fix it.

yeah i hate those pellets, we had to do that to all the impallas, there was a recall, dont know about the rest of ya, but im not grinding up dirt pellets and purposefully putting them in my cooling system, just have to come back and replace my heater core in a year or two cuz its clogged and leaking. i say take it back to them, and strait up tell them you dont want a mickey mouse fix, they did the work, they should fix it right, dont let them take the easy way out. the LS1 is an increadably well engineered peice of machinery, there is no reason it should be loosing coolant if it was proporly built. refuse the quick fix, and tell them you want the job done corectly. or your money back.
