The stupidest question any sane individual could ask another is:
If a tree falls in the woods and there's no one present to hear it, does it make a sound?

For years I simply dismissed this question as fucking stupid.

But I was driving home from work today and happened to see a rather large limb fall from a tree, which started me thinking.

My solution:

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, then it does in fact make a sound, but who gives a flying squirrel shit?

Ive got an answer: If a tree falls and you are there it makes sound waves that hit your eardrum making noise. If your not there the sound waves still go out theres just nothing to pick them up. It would make a noise.

The idiots point of view: How do you know the tree even fell if you werent there to see it?

I suppose it all depends on your definition of "sound". Is sound an ear recieving waves, an object making them, or the combination of both. Personally, I think sound and hearing are two different matters altogether. The tree makes a SOUND, but you don't HEAR it. How arrogant one would have to be to believe that sound can only exist if they are personally there to experience it.

I'm one of those philosophy ijits...

This is one for the dictionary......
But I agree. A sound can be made independently of anyone being around to hear it.

I learned this in philosophy class, and YES, if no one is there, there is no sound... there are molecular vibrations that travel through the local matter at 1085ft/sec in air, but this is not "sound" sound is when they strike an eardrum and a brain interpits this stimuli as something. There is no image w/o an eye is there?

I disagree entirely. For instance, prior to the discovery of protons, electrons, and neutrons, did they exist. They may not have been named, but evidently they've been around awhile.

Soundwaves are merely shock waves, which are simply pulsating compressions of matter (the molecules don't actually move [in air we would call the movement of molecules "wind"]).

Right now I'm online, on my laptop, using an 802.11g connection to my wireless router, which connects through a cable modem. The waves being transmitted use the same principles as sound waves, only with a shorter wavelength. So ask yourself: If I shut down this computer, is the router still emitting a 2.4 Ghz signal?

Actually, this was the first dumb thing that I posted. The other was on a different day, after several beers and I am sorry about that. But what's wrong with it? It's had multiple good responses and was starting to pick up some pace, but then all the hating began. Why don't you find something else to do than to fuck up a perfectly good thread?

By the ways is that avatar an actual picture of you? If it is, we should take up a collection to pay for your face lift and haircut as soon as possible! think of the children for Christ's sake.

wow. just wow. such debate on a stupid little phrase designed to clear the head. why don't we all just agree to dissagree. but i KNOW for a fact that it would make a sound. if you hear one tree fall, you heard them ALL fall. so it would make a sound wheather there is anyone to hear it or not.

That question not only has but 1 common answer, but about 5 other differant answers that not many people are aware of.

In a professional sence, your "expertise" is what determines the answer.
For example: A biologist would say "If a tree fell down, were any other plants affected, what affect does this have on the environment" etc, a musicologist would say "if it did make a sound, would it be measurable", etc.

i love that question and if a tree falls and no-one is there to hear it then the truth is we'll never ever know, because we wont be there to hear it, it really is that simple

A sound is a wave. For something to even move, it makes a sound even if its the slightest thing like air moving over the surface of an object, there for, yes it did make a sound. If it moved, it made a sound. You cannot ask what if it never happened because you just said yourself, the tree fell...
