sup guys first time postin here i have a 93 red gt. Next week im going to purchase a cold air intake. The only thing i have really seen is the K&N cold air or the Injen short ram. What do u guys think i should do? Get the cold air or short ram and if so which brand should i go for. Thx a lot (car is base model so no turbo stuff is goin to work) :sly:

Id go with the cheaper short ram intake if your looking for just a basic intake. If it's an N/A car, the cold intake wouldnt do too much

just go with a k&n, u dont need all the show just get a nice filter.

i live in Delaware pretty hot round here right now so hopin the cold air will give some better performance and also should it make it sound a little louder? I already have 2 Power 1 exhausts on it. Thx
youngvr4
07-20-2004, 07:29 PM
i don't think the sound will be any diff but if you live in a hot area then the colder the air(even if it isn't a lot) the better
Raz_Kaz
07-20-2004, 07:29 PM
The sound will be a bit more noticeable, but nothing compared to a BOV!!! Id still say go with the short ram....no reason to go with an intake twice as much when the power difference is hardly noticeable

I never heard of K&N "cold air intake" kits? where did you see that?

Whoa, I never knew Injen made intakes for our cars. Italian Lunaticz, when you're really ready to buy, make sure you call the people and know exactly what you're getting because sometimes they might not have everything that's in the picture. Because I was looking at some K&N's a while back and they had both the pipe and filter displayed but when I called them, they're like the pipe's not included. So yeah, just a heads up...

Oh yeah, do you guys know if that Injen intake is CARB certified or not?

Injen is a very reputable company, if that thing actually fits our cars I might just get one. looks real nice! wonder what the dyno results would look like compared to the 3sx intake pipe.

I don't think the pipe would give any performance gains would it? I always thought that they were just there for looks... Musashi3000GT, are you looking into getting a short ram or cold air?
But yeah, if that package includes both the filter and pipe, that's a really good deal. Too bad it's not CARB certified (I couldn't find it on the list) otherwise I'd get it....

well Slade, the theory is that mass of air is affected by the surface it travels on. this means that if the surface is rough, air will travel slow. if the surface is smooth then air travels faster. a smooth intake with really smooth surface area = faster air delivery to the throtle body = more power. also air mass can slow down or turbulate (turbulance) according to change in direction of travel. in other words ; the less bends or less angle of bend the easier the air will travel. so the shape, size, and material (or finish) in an intake pipe does affect air travel therefore affecting power.
sLADe781
07-20-2004, 09:20 PM
I see....but isn't the stock pipe "smoothe" in the inside? The outside looks bumpy and rubbery but since the inside is smoothe, wouldn't it make the air travel the same? Would the material that it's made out of affect it too that's why a metal-type of pipe is better? But yeah, what you said makes sense. :)
Raz_Kaz
07-20-2004, 09:31 PM
metal type surface has less "roughness" compared to plastic
Musashi3000GT
07-20-2004, 09:39 PM
Metal also heats up and stays hot alot longer than plastic or rubber so the type of metal is also important. and the plastic stock intake has those ribs, those things "effect" air travel.
Raz_Kaz
07-20-2004, 09:42 PM
Metal also can be cooler than plastic when air travels through it

here is what that particular K&N kit looks like for the 3000GT.
http://www.knfilterchargers.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=57-1500-1
I know that you saw it advertised as a "Cold air kit" but it really is not. all it is a free floating filter and adapter which uses the stock air pipe. its good quality but its just a filter, now the Injen one caught my eye. it comes with the filter and the pipe, so you get more for your money. I would get the injen one. my friend got a Injen short ram kit for his Honda Element (its the only aftermarket product he found according to him) and the thing actually showed a gain of 8 HP on the Dyno. that is freaking awsome for a simple intake and filter!

They conducted a research and found that K&N will actually give you the best HP gains

Does anyone know how effective "ram air" devices are? I have seen stuff about how they work but DO they realy work? And how much HP on the dyno does a K&N give our cars (TT & NA).

Ram intake is the lowest form of "forced induction" that there is. it will increase HP for sure since its forcing air into the engine. I'm waiting to get a carbon fiber hood with a vent right above the filter, then I'll have the guys at the machine shop cut me up some sheet metal to seal the filter from the engine bay and thus all that hot vapor. it should result in a nice ambient cold air/ ram intake hybrid. now I just gotta figure out a shot-off for when it rains :cwm27:

i hate insurance. they don't really have to charge us that much money. thousands and thousands of people pay them hundreds of dollars a month. they have way too much money to have to charge us so much.

if i wasn't going thru my moms insurance i would have to pay 370 a month. because of a dumb accident i got into but still. my record was fine until then. people learn from there mistakes. so they just charge you 150 dollars extra for 2 years. ahh well, its life gotta deal with it

k guys 1 last question. I noticed when checkin out the intakes there are no "cold air" intakes for my model but i have found a Injen and K&N "air intake." Im gonna buy 1 soon but im just wonderin will a regular air intake still gimme some power compared to the cold air? Thx. :loser:
Raz_Kaz
07-21-2004, 03:02 PM
I do believe Injen has a CAI for the 3s. Either intake will generate some HP numbers but those numbers will varie from setup to setup. I can look for a site that will give you some ball park numbers....just let me finish ths call :icon16:
youngvr4
07-21-2004, 03:49 PM
like i said the coder the air teh better. you wouldn't get no more than 3-4 more ponies from cold air but but every stalion counts in my book. if you dont wanna spend the money then just use a simple K&N it will do you just fine.

which do u guys think is better short ram or cai...i mean ive seen people say short ram is better and others say cai is better.
I think ive come to the conclusion that it just depends on the company and their test.
