It'd be cheaper than buying a new car but I'd expec the cost to be several hundreds of dollars and upwards of a cool grand. If it comes out to be closer to a grand, you might want to consider buying a used, low-mileage engine and swapping it as that'd be about a thousand.

You're looking at anywhere from $900 to $1200 either way. The car should still be worth around $1800 to $2400 with a decent engine, depending on the condition it's in and the mileage. It really depends on what you'd rather do. You can probably sell yours without fixing it for around $500 bucks and put a couple of thousand with it and get a new one. However, it would be a bit of a waste of money when you could just fix what you've got for a lot less. Also, if you buy another car for $2000 dollars you run the risk of the engine in it being old and unstable as well. I'd do as suggested and try and find a low mileage engine somewhere.
