how do you retard your timing?

we just installed a zex kit on my friends type r. right now we only have a 55 shot on it with the timing at zero. to put a bigger shot the directions say the timing has to be retarded 2degrees for each nozzle size we go up. so how do we go about doing that? other than the spray the car is stock.

I have no experience with nitrous, so if it means cam timing, you need to get some adjustable cam gears. If it means ignition timing, you need to rotate the distributor 2 degrees towards the front of the car.

-1st u need to place a jumper wire between the service plug connector (located above the passenger side kickpanel. it's usually in a green rubber casing. remove it from the casing and place a jumper wire between the plug (when u start the car the CEL will come on. this is normal)
-hook up an inductive timing light to spark plug wire # 1
-loosen but dont remove the three bolts holding the distributor assembly in place.
-start the car. Let it idle for a while until the radiator fan comes on. now aim the timing light towards the timing belt cover (down by the crank pulley) u need to aim it by the point/marker on the timing belt cover.
-if ur car is at 0 degrees advanced timing (timing set at 16 degrees), then the point on the timng belt should be lined up with the red marking on the crank pulley. U will also notice two white lines on both sides of this red marking. the white line closest to the front of the vehicle is timing set at 18 degrees timing (or 2 degrees advanced timing) and the one closest to the firewall is set at 14 dgrees timng (or 2 degrees retarded) u want to get the point on the timing belt cover to be lined up with the white line closest to the firewall(2 degrees retarded)
-with the distributor loosen, u want to move it towards the front of the vehicle. just give it a small tap and it should move. u want to move it in small increments. everytime u move the distributor, check the timing to see where the white line that is closest to the firewall is in reference to the timing belt marking.
-once u have this white line on the crank pulley lined up with the timng belt point/marking, tighten back up the distributor bolts. (u might want to check the timing once more to make sure u didnt move the distributor while u were tighten it up)
-remove the timing light and the jumper cable from the service connector plug inside your car. (the CEL will go off now)
make sure to remove this wire. i drove my car for a while with the wire still connected to the plug. nothing bad will happen to ur car. i think all it does is keep the timing of the car set at a certain value. i think the ECU wont be able to make adjustments to ignition timing when the jumper wire is still connected.

BTW ur spray n the Type R that is stock. u should at least get some I/H/E first before... wait a second, i forgot i was talking about a type R here. they already got good flowing exhaust. an intake will help though.

good luck
