Hot Start Problems

Maybe someone can help me here! I have a 1972 Chevy C/10 with a 1979 350 engine. I am having hot start problems and cannot pinpoint the cause.
I will go start it up just fine, run it around about 10 or 20 mins, shut it off and if I try to crank back up I get a Grrr, Grrr, Grrr, noise. Kinda like when the battery is dead. If I let the truck cool down for a while it will crank back up. I have checked the alternator, battery, and replaced the starter. Also I have added a remote starter (Ford fender mount) to take the heat awya from the GM solenoid. THe headers are finda close. I have no idea what to check next any suggestions???

Dude, your post has been driving me nuts! It just screams overheated solenoid but I can't see it being overheated if its mounted on the fender (good thinking by the way). I'm leaning toward carb trouble but I have no clue what. Choke maybe?? Could any of your fuel lines be heating up?? I have no clue but I'll ask around, see if anyone I know has any ideas. Keep us posted.

sound like you need to replace the battery cables.. (especially the one to the starter) they will cause those exact symtoms if they are old.

I don't think it is the choke on the carb, it gets plenty of gas. I will check the fuel lines I do not know how close they come to the headers and exhaust pipes.
Battery cables are new, that was my first thought too. Keep you posted I will be under the truck this evening.

chances are it is the starter again... you need to either get a high performance one or fabricate a heat shield to go between the starter and headers

I had the same prob on a '86 chevy truck. Check your coil pack and your modual in the distributor. Mine was the coil pack was bad. I dont remember how to check the coil pack but the modual you can bring to a Napa store and they can test it for free.

Could be the starter, But the first thing I would check is the timing. If it cranks ok cold and turns over slow when hot it is a sign that your timing is to far advanced.

It ended up being the timing to advanced. Got it set, still a bit advanced but not enough to affect the cranking. Thanks for your help!!

I had the same problem added a heatshield,starter,igntion switch,battery.Coil and distbuter are about two years only but only have a bout 6k miles on them alt is at 14. but battery only at 9volts
