'89 Ranger Tranny Question

I have an '89 Ranger, 2.9L, 4spd OD and I'm having a bit of tranny problems and not sure what the problem is...
You have to start out in Drive and then when you get about up to 60 KM's then you can shift it into OD and then it works fine... but if you try and start out in OD it won't budge and then you have to put it back into Park before you can put it back into Drive for it to work...
Any suggestions on what I can do besides replacing the tranny, or what the problem could be...
