99 4-cyl

I recently bought a 99 4Runner 4-Cyl... yes 4-cyl :)

Everyone I talk to says "I thought they quit putting 4-cyl engines in those things in 9x?"

Anyone know anything about it?

It will go places most won't and it will last longer than you want it to. :)

They didn't offer them in the early 90's but with the redesign in 96 it became the base engine. They were dropped in 2000. I test drove one and I was amazed at how much power it had for such a small motor and such a big vehicle. Toyota did a really good job with gearing and power band in that vehicle.

I have a 4cyl. in my 2000. It's bulletproof and is plenty of power for me. Unless I'm going up a hill, then it sucks. But the only "hills" where I live is the bridges so it's perfect for me, lasts forever and better MPG.

I agree it has plenty of power for me. Here in TN there are quite a lot of hills, but I haven't had too much problem with it. It does has the towing package on it... do you think it would have enough power to move a boat? Oh, and is it safe to use for putting a boat in water since it is 2-wd (rear)?

Yeah the 4cyl. is fine for towing. I pull around a trailer identical to this every single day at work with no problem.

And you can tow a boat and pull it out no problem. I pull my 17' Boston Whaler all the time and pull it out. Hope this helps. :smile:

Supercharge it! That way you have 4 cylinder fuel economy, 6 cylinder power. Plenty to haul that boat.

whalers are sweet pops has an 18 foot, anyways i wouldn't push my luck with the boat thing, im sure it can pull one , but i doubt it can pull even a small boat out of the boat ramp im used to, if you are familliar with the ramp and it seems nice, then have at it

In the case of a 2WD, don't back onto sand or dirt on a steep incline to pull out a boat.
