Book theft leads to car chase, police say
Monday, July 19, 2004
By Mike McAndrew
Staff writer
After Bryan Haynes was caught, Syracuse police could have thrown "the book" at him.
The Syracuse motorist refused to pull over for officers - and even drove against traffic on Erie Boulevard trying to shake them - because he had a stolen library book in his car, Sgt. Thomas Connellan said.
"It was stupid," Connellan said.
Haynes, 36, of 211 Bruce St., stole a book from Syracuse University's Bird Library shortly before an officer spotted him at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in a Ford Expedition passing through a stop sign in Thornden Park, Connellan said.
For about 10 minutes, police pursued him through the city's East Side, onto Interstate 690 and into the North Side. During the chase, officers saw the suspect toss a backpack out the car window, Connellan said.
Officers broke off the pursuit because it was getting too dangerous, the sergeant said.
Then deputies in the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office's helicopter followed Haynes' car until it stopped in Elmwood Park, where city police caught Haynes.
Officers recovered Haynes' backpack - which contained the stolen book, Connellan said.
Haynes was held overnight in the Justice Center Jail for arraignment today on charges of reckless endangerment, petit larceny and reckless driving, all misdemeanors, and numerous vehicle and traffic infractions.

Obviously you've never read a real book, otherwise you'd have some reading comprehension.

I think that the dumbest car chases are those that happen when people run when they see the cops, even when they haven't currently broken the law, outstanding tickets, warrants etc.

The fact that he had to stop for gas 3 times during the short chase and consequently complained about the price per gallon each time, was curiously omitted...

It says "Sunday in a Ford Expedition passing through a stop sign in Thornden Park, Connellan said." I think its easy to assume he was getting a misdemeanor for the book and they spotted him at a stop sign. You dont have to snap back with some smart-ass answer.
