The MR2 being MR, means it's not designed for drift, rather it's designed for GRIP.
If you want to drift, get an FR car.

easy setup
1. sell the mr2
2. buy a FR car
or
put crappy tires on it and be somewhere it rains a lot

MRs can be drifted too. The best drifts there are too; crisp and fast. If you care to look, download the Bestmotoring Drift Bible if you have the capabilities. It shows a basically stock MR2 tearing it up at a nice drift track. In Japanese though, so can't really listen to it.

we know that it is possible, you can drift anything. what we're saying is that the MR platform is not ideal for losing traction when you want to.

sure it is. as long as you understand the fundamentals of weight transfer. it's not hard at all on the mr layout to loose traction and turn that lost traction into a drift. i do it on occasion not really tough, just takes some practice and lots of patience.

don't listen to all the idiots saying it can't be done! and for those that know it can be done, and say to buy another car... why do you even post? do you think thats helpful in any way whatsoever? we all know the mr2 isn't a prime drifter but it is fun to try and it is very possible to be fairly good at it.
as for a setup, this is what works for me. i have tein s.tech springs on kyb agx shocks. the tein springs aren't what i would recommend for drifting since they are a progressive rate spring meaning they don't get stiff until they are under heavier than normal compression. find a linear spring instead. they have the same spring rate all the time and are much more predictable. off the top of my head the only ones i can think of are rsr. as far as shocks. just get anything adjustable. the kybs are crazy stiff and a little uncomfortable for daily driving but are the cheapest and do their job well. tokicos are a little more expensive but more streetable and are 5 way adjustable instead of 4 way like the kybs. koni yellows are a much more expensive route and if you have the kind of money to spend on them, you might as well buy coilovers. the mkII chassis is already pretty stiff so strut tower bars don't really make a huge difference. when you get your shocks, you want to set the rear stiffer than the front. that makes less understeer and more oversteer. don't go full stiff on rear and full soft on front because you probably won't be able to control the oversteer. and now, my little secret. it actually happened by accident but made things 10x's easier. disconnect one of the front sway bar endlinks.the little piece that goes from your sway bar and mounts on your strut housing. when autocrossers setup their suspension, they buy bigger front bars to induce a little understeer. we want the opposite, so do the opposite. instead of upgrading the front bar, make it useless. now you should have no problem breaking the back end loose! play with the adjustments on the shocks until its like you like it and practice practice practice. but not on the streets! that setup will get you sliding but controlling it is up to you. start off slow!

...
- An effective drifter is the Toyota SW20 MR2, its transverse rear-mid engine and rear wheel drive setup is more than the perfect ingredients for an excellent drift car. The MR2 is a well-balanced car which makes it ideal for drifting. Its strong center of gravity allows it to enter corners at high speeds and exit at roughly the same amount of throttle. Depending on whether you have a decent tire/suspension setup, the MR2 should be easily groomed into a drift machine. Having bucket seats and five point seatbelts might help you withstand the G-force when drifting. The MR2 is known for coming out of corners hard because of its little understeer / oversteer factor. This allows it to accelerate directly, without having to fight with the steering wheel. This little guy will really toss you around if you don't know how to handle it properly.

haha that's classy jekyl!
now i can see no problem with drifting it one way at a time, they balance out beautifully! my problem would probably be switching back... like in chicanes and stuff... it just doesn't feel like you can get it as far sideways, meaning if you do it's going to be harder to get back for an opposite corner.
now i THINK the guy drifting the MR2 in the bible (if i have the right car and its a silver one?) is the japanese "drift king" Keiichi Tsuchiya. He basically started drifting, and D1, so while it can be done....

To put this to an end once and for all. The MR2 is an excellent drift car which throughout the years has aquired a reputation for being tail happy. This leads people to believe that a MR2 is a poor drift car. What is happening with you poor fools who can't drift an MR2 is quite simply you don't have the necessary skill\talent\experience (take your pick!) to react to the cars slide (which will easily be a 4 wheel drift if correct braking\accelerator\countersteer principles are applied). Rear wheel drive cars such as the hatchi roku, FD3, S13\14 etc. Have less weight over the driven wheels which makes it easier for the less talented of us out there to exceed the cars grip limit. Now enough of this silliness everyone! (Oh yeah, and as a point, the 5SFE engine is poo, no matter how much you americans argue)

lol ... Sandhawk, they were talking about my other quote (2 posts up from my last post). :)
If you guys look, I posted that in July. So I am not sure exactly what site I got it off of.
However, if you just google the first part:
"effective drifter is the Toyota SW20 MR2"
You will quickly find these sites:
http://npclub.com/bb/printthread.php?threadid=6453
http://www.driftuk.co.uk/Techniques/Grip%20Drive.htm
I believe those Sites are also quoting a "source" ... lol.
I suspect if you look around the net, (search for pieces of the quote), you will find the author.
