1993 Prelude SI Engine HP

I own a 1993 SI with a 2.3 Litre DOHC (non VTEC) engine. At one time, a mechanic showed me that the engine had a 220 HP rating. The info was on a spec plate located on the underside of the hood. I am told that that engine only puts out 160 HP. I have since replaced the hood and can't prove what I know I saw. Were there any motors rated at 220 HP in that model/ year?

Yes! The car leaves rubber from a stopped position.

i've never heard of an SI w/ 220hp, that sounds like an H22a - S

Your 2.3 non-vtec motor is called an H23A, in which all are rated at 160hp.
The only motors for the prelude that came with 220hp are the [H22A Euro-R] and the [H22A Type-S], which were only available in japan for the 5th generation Prelude.
I'm sorry to hear that you've been misinformed by your mechanic, but i am positive your motor has 160hp.

I asked him how he knew the HP, and he showed me the details on a spec plate on the underside of the hood. How can I get my engines model #?

There should be a code stamped on your block.
If it says H23A, your car has 160hp.
Prelude Si's never came with any other motors besides the 160hp H23A's anyway; the only reason your car would have any more than that, is if the motor was swapped.

my 2.3 does not burn rubber on a good road. engine code will tell, but this thing sounds strong.

Here's a question for the well informed. I've heard of the very rare 2.3 liter vtec in japan. What HP/torque rating does that have, and what years/cars did it come in?

i read anywhere from 220-240hp and like 160-170tq from various engine importer's websites

They cam in some JDM accord wagons. In essence, an h23 block with an h22 vtec head. I believe they were also rated at 200hp and/or 220, except for more torque.

Thanks, I think it would be nice to have an H23/H22 frankenstein built by Honda engineers. Maybe it wasn't very reliable and just wasn't worth the extra little torque/power.

Exactly, hence the reason why nobody every does the h23/h22 franks.

The Euro-R Accord is 200hp, and is available in Europe, not Japan . And yes, it's a 2.3L VTEC. The Type S and SiR (Type R) h22a engines are 220hp.
No H series to date rates more than 220hp. And no 2.3 litre engines have made it past 200hp; Euro-R or otherwise. The F22C, which is relatively uncompatible with Preludes, rates at 240hp and is from an S2000. The F22B is a 2.2L non VTEC motor with the same power rating as an H23A, 160hp.
And contrary to popular belief, the H23A makes less torque than the H22A, despite greater displacement.

The Block shows an H1 designation. What does that mean?
