I was thinking of selling my current car in a few months and buying a 3000gt vr-4 because I want a car that I could modify without killing the resale value of my car (I drive a Saleen S281 and from what Ive seen they drop in value from modifications, and theres nothing left to modify cept installing a supercharger anyhow).
My question is what are the major mechanical differences between the first and second gen vr-4s? I know that the second bodystyle runs higher boost, and thats about it. Are both 6 speeds? I saw a first gen vr4 that said it was a 5 speed but it might have been a mistake.

This is a pretty common ?, and if you do a search in this forum you will find much more in-depth answers.
But quickly, 91-93 was the first gen
94-98 2nd gen
99 some have dubbed the "third gen" due to a few changes, but technically it is still considered the same as 94-98.

91-93 had 5spds, they were set at 9-10psi from the factory
94-99 6spds set at 12psi. This accounted for the 20hp difference between the 2 generations, but this can be easily remedied by fooling with the boost selonoid. Do a search for "free boost mod" if you want more info on that.
94-98 had a few different internal parts, some of which were changed mid-92 or in 93. 91-mid 93 had 2-bolt mains, mid 93+ have 4-bolt mains(although it doesn't really matter unless you plan on modding the hell out of it).

So when you have common questions like this, try the search feature as they get addressed quite often.
