Celica, MR2 Will Die After ’05

I'll miss the MR Spyder.
Toyota announced Friday that it will discontinue the Celica and MR2 sports coupes after the 2005 model year, disappointing Ray-Ban-wearing readers of Maxim across America. Perhaps, I'm being too glib. Though these fine and respectable affordable sporty coupes have been steadily losing their audiences over the last decade, we should remember that the Celica was Toyota's first real step out of the utilitarian class back in 1970. And the MR2 was, as Car and Driver said in the early 1990s, "an exotic car for the rest of us."

The celica may still stay in production... so to speak.. they might just call it something else... for example.. honda cancled the integra here in the states.. but brought the rsx... same car though. I think toyota has something up thier sleeve.. atleast i hope

i dont think the tC is a celica. Or a redesigned celica. If it was, they would have badged it celica in some other market. Just like honda with the rsx/integra. I'd like to see the celica return as a more powerful rwd or awd car. The market for either is pretty good right now.

RWD is the shiznit. I dont know if I would miss the celica if they cancelled production. Its been around for a long time and im thinking a new car could be a nice change.

screw rwd cars, they handle like tanks, plus they cant rally worth shit, they should be all wheel drive or stay front

RWD handles like a tank? First of all there are plenty of rear wheel drive cars out there that will hand alot of FWD cars thier a$$ in a road coarse. Your statement is ignorant. A skilled driver can take advantage of a rwd system much better than a fwd setup. In a fwd car if you plow into a turn and understeer your kinda stuck... in a rwd you can tap the gas, break the tired loose and correct yourself. let me name a few cars currently in production that will outperform the good majority of fwd cars.
Lotus Elise
Honda S2000
Chevy Corvette
Mazda Miata
Mazda RX-8
Ferrari, Ferrari, Ferrari.....
need i say more ?

Yes, the Toyota bB is called the Scion xB here in the US. The Toyota Ist is the Scion xA here... and the new tC is based on the Toyota Avensis chasis.

no this something like a ferrari will handle much better than something like a honda or toyta celica, im just saying something as low powered as a celica rwd? that will suck ass it wont have the power to pull it through a turn
analogvoid
08-24-2004, 12:52 PM
who ever said it had to be low powered ? Look at the gt-4, although rwd.. it was powered by a 3s-gte. A motor capable of handling well over 500hp on the stock bottom end.

were not talking about a 3sgte, there talkin about taking the 1zzfe and 2zzge and making them rwd, theyd blow my ass, neither one makes alot of tourqe, but the 2zzge does make a reasonable amount of ponies

If toyota introduced a new car that was rwd, i highly doubt they would use either of those engines.

If 2005 is last year i think they should introduce a new model for the car in its last year. Something more like the 5th gen would be fucking awesome...with either RWD or AWD(prefferably AWD) with stock 215hp (higher with higher model).......Only in my dreams would this happen, but god that would be fucking sweet

The last year of the celica will most likely be a ZZT23X chasis. They wont make a new car for one year of production. After 2005 though, it's all up in the air.

that would be hella dope if they put out an awd 7th gen with a revised 3sgte that incorperate the vvtl-i, theyed call it 3sgtz :)
analogvoid
08-25-2004, 09:33 AM
thats just wishful thinking.. There is a 3s-ge (non turbocharged) that has vvt-i that makes 210 hp. I'm sure it makes a nice ammount of torque as well. It actualy is setup for RWD application, and with the torque it produces, it should be fun in a low weight car.

any celica is a good celica, i love my 87 gt with the limited slip front wheel drive set up, and i love the old rwd ones to, as long as they come out with a new version of the vcelica i will be pleased

The 3S-GE is in the current Altezza (some people know it as IS200) in japan, modeled as the RS200. They have also have an AS200 which uses the 1G-FE which is the weak motor, something like 60hp.
I didn't know they were dropping the MRS, just thought the celica was going. And yea like someone else said the tC is in no way a new celica, I mean for got sakes it has a camry motor in it :eek7: yea yea, 160 hp/tq, still a camry motor.

oh what about the american is200....
SigmaProjects
09-16-2004, 06:15 PM
uh.. American IS 200? I said what is known here as an IS 200, cuz for Americans we only have the IS 300, which is the the non-tuned 2JZ (can't remember the rest of the engine model). Only in Europe and the Auzies have the IS 200 (AS 200 in japan), which from what i've seen is kinda slow in perforamnce (155 hp) compared the Japanese RS 200 (210hp). The IS 200 also uses the 1G-FE, although it sounds cooler than the 3S-GE cuz the 1G is a straight six, it's weak... if it was a 1G-GE, like in the old 2000GT, but of course tuned for todays standards maybe it would fair better, or if it was turbo chargerd, but the 1G is longer than the 3S and possibly heavier and not really tuned to pack a huge punch. If I would tune a straight six it would be the 1JZ or the 2JZ (that's available from the toyota).
BTW: I meant to say that the AS 200 has 160hp not 60hp

I think what Toyota should do to get both the Celica and Supra back on the market is bring back the rear-wheel-drive Celica Supra of the 80's. Now THAT would kick ass. My dad would buy one in two seconds :)

ok i havent looked at this thread for a while so going to some of the earlier posts
you highly doubt toyota would make a rwd car with those engines?
the mrs is a rwd one of the best handling cars there is... it actually handles better than silvias and s2000's arround corners and it uses the 1zz engine... a common swap is the 2zz engine for more power... so theres one thing cleared up
the rs200 has the 215hp BEAMS dual vvti 3sge (black top)
i kno ive said taht a million times but for those of u who dont kno yet
sigma,
why does it being a strait six make it a bad engine?
also lesson on toyota engine codes..
t = turbo example 3sgte
tt = twin turbo example 2jzgtte
ge = performance engine examples 3sGtE 3sGE 2jzGE

sigma,
why does it being a strait six make it a bad engine?
sorry if it came out that way, meant it sounds cooler cuz it's a small straight six, but has some weak heads.
