Celica, MR2 Will Die After ’05

Toyota announced Friday that it will discontinue the Celica and MR2 sports coupes after the 2005 model year, disappointing Ray-Ban-wearing readers of Maxim across America. Perhaps, I'm being too glib. Though these fine and respectable affordable sporty coupes have been steadily losing their audiences over the last decade, we should remember that the Celica was Toyota's first real step out of the utilitarian class back in 1970. And the MR2 was, as Car and Driver said in the early 1990s, "an exotic car for the rest of us."

yeah they've announced the mr2 will die before... and then they brought out the girlie version! Toyota have some gaps to fill thats for sure... no supra and the fastest current mr2's and celicas go back to the 3s-gte. While theres a market for fast cars they will be silly not to bring something out. You'll probably also find people in here don't care too much cause it's mainly about proper mr2's. I suggest you check out the allesandro volta concept.

I'm a girl, so I liked the girlie syder. The Celica is not nice though. The Tiburon looks much better, but its made by the wrong car company. I just bought a Mercedes CLK, and when I wanted a roadster, the Mercedes SLK was my choice over the MR S. I just posted this to let you all know. I hang out mainly over at BenzWorld.

actually i've changed my mind... after reading that article i've decided it's crap. IF i am to take it seriously i would have to ignore the fact that it says nothing about toyota japan and the fact it states the turbo coming out in 91 when it didn't. Are you sure they just won't be stocked in america anymore, i know that when something's not in america the perception could be (and has been) that it is not in production, but thats just not the case. Further, i would like to reiterrate my point on the MR2 going girlie, SO DID THE CELICA, and theres any wonder why demand stopped? the original celica was rear wheel drive not front, how did it ever get front? and whats with the 180hp current engine being potent? i say you want to make a celica you take the ZR and you whack a new generation 3s-gte (complete with vvtl-I) in with the altezzas 6spd and rear wheel drive... theres a purist celica! the 3s-gte even has a yamaha head the same as the old celica! or with the same engine revive the GT4! enough with the girlie shopping carts! The MR2 has only survived this long because of an off the books design project by some in house enthusiasts that managed to get a cencept in a show! public demand got it built... but the JGTC cars have gone back to a proper engine setup for them. Toyota had already done away with it.

I'm guessing they'll bring back the MR2 in a few years, but I'm not so sure about the Celica. The Scion tC seems to be superior in every way.

you have to remember what you see in america is not what japan produces... even current cars like the evo 8 arent up[ to spec... america gets less power... the old gearbox... and softer suspension and steering, all of which reduce performance!

in the meantime it works both ways WRX's after they were released for america got heavier... uglier... and the steering had no feedback.. but instead of just selling them that way for america subaru decided to sell U.S spec everywhere... consequently their sales went down everywhere else and they had to revert to the old specs and change the look just to sell cars!

i can however, unfortunately, see them dropping the cars cause both the current models (and all toyotas other current sports cars) suck! I'd have baught something else too.

just checked out the scion... its not a sports car its a get around for your mother... 2.4 liter low compression long stroke engine made for cruising not racing! and look at the weight... the car has been built right from the outset on a different level so it's not a comparison. the celica is better being compared to a honda integra (acura rsx). the celica puts out 180hp the scion 160 (from a bigger engine) the old celica GT4 put out around 260 (and that wasn't tuned as hard as the new celica is) and it had AWD and easy potential for a couple of hundred more hp.
I like the SLK but the CLK is too heavy, did you look at BMW when you were shopping?
(i'm writing lots of messages cause my computers screwing up and i lost a few.)

I personally like the looks of the new Celicas, and the MR2 spyders have looked alright, if they are in darker colors. Just what I think.

just some comments
the mr2 turbo did come out in 1991... 1991 turbos have to be the most numberous out of all the years it was produced.... 1991 - 1995
the celica comes with 180hp 1.8L... the tc comes with 160hp 2.4L.. trd is also said to come out with a supercharger shortly which will bring its hp to 200... maybe they made it low compression to make it more f/i friendly...
one reason why the jdm cars are more powerful is because of the gas in japan... it is all high octane... the mr2 2nd gen ecu is set for 100 octane i think... thats why when u swap in a jdm 3sgte you have to get a new ecu and it doesnt produce the expected 225hp (assuming its the 2nd gen)

NOPE... it came out in the states in 1991... and it was produced after 95 too.
2nd. JDM cars don't have a cat converter.
this is what i mean about people thinking that the only cars out there are the ones on sale in the U.S!
you guys get so ripped off on quality of cars... made up for by the price of cars and gas i guess.

hey man whats wrong with the 2ZZ-GE, it has tons of potential right up there with any high end Honda motor, not to forget the chassis on that celica, has cat like reflexes. In my opion Toyota doesnt have a clue with marketing their cars or who design their newer ones(exception to the celica),i do have to agree they have been pointing towards girlie stuff. the scion is for people who just want to look cool and make them think they are fast. A guy at a Toyota dealership said a new Supra was supposed to come out in 05, and I've heard that in a couple of mags too. Toyota needs to go back to its roots, of more say racing the 3SGTE is pure racing breed. we have to relize also that the market here and over seas is different, look at Europe why cant we get any cosworth built Fords.

dont give up hope... arent u up to date with toyotas recent concepts? they designed 2 new hybrid engines one with 408hp the other with 600hp and get 60 mhp (suposidly) im guessing that that is the direction toyota wants to head

the jgtc mr2's have dumped the 2zz for longditudally mounted 3s-gte... i know the 2zz is a great engine but after 10 years of 3s-gte it is still a bit girlie. I also agree with the celica handling, though i prefer not FF. I've been trying to find out info on a new supra but can't find much.. check out the allesandro volta concept car they made, i can't see it in production next year but maybe in a couple of years.

if you look at either this month or last month of SportCompact Car(i am not at home right now) in the very back it shows a Toyota concept car I think we are talking about the same one(allesandro) which has a regular old gas motor and electric and Toyota says that they were exercising some new design or some crap, But it is "suposed" to be the next supra, I sure would like to know!!

If toyotas ceo's were 1/2 as smart as the engineers they would hold off of sports cars for a couple years, then release a new supra, mr2, and all-trac celica (all with availible hardtop) in the same year. It would be the ultimate triple threat. But there not cool enough to do something like that.
