Towing with 2002 Alero 2.2

Has anyone ever towed with an Oldsmobile Alero with the new 2.2 Ecotec engine? The tow limit is 1000 lbs and I was thinking about towing a popup trailer rated at that weight and just wondering if anyone has had any good or bad experiences towing trailers?

I'm not sure if you have checked out the owners manual but the 1000 lb. towing limit is for the 3400 V6. GM does not recommend towing with the 2.2 and if I were you, I wouldn't try it. Of course, if damage to the car happens while towing, it would not be covered under the warranty.

Actually, the owner's manual and all webpages list the 2.2 with a 1000 lbs towing capacity- with these cars it isn't so much the engine as the body strength to pull the trailer.

Well, I guess that I'm just on crack. You're right...it is safe to tow with the 2.2 engine. I must have been thinking about my old Malibu. I still have the owners manual and I looked through it to double check. With the 97 Malibu's you cannot tow with the 2.4 engine. Sorry about my mix up.
