95 jetta III GLS question

Hi, my girlfriend loves volkswagens and is looking to get a 95 Jetta III GLS; however, it is being sold private party for only about 2700. It has 76000 miles on it total, but had to replace an engine at 61,000 - so now it has 19,000. This seems like a lemon, but I have no history with volkswagens, was this a bad year or something? The moonroof's motor also doesnt work and the seller has had to replace alot of things. I believe this price is very low and I am skeptical - can anyone give me their input or any ideas on it? She loves it, but I dont want it to be a money pit- help me out, thank you much.

that seems just fine for a 95 gls. theres glx's over here for 2500 that are perfectly running so u could offer them less. if u are planning on keeping it stock if u kno anything about working on cars it won't become a money pit. vw engines like tune ups so don't slack on taking care of it and it should be fine. look around forums to see what people are complaining about most. like most vws will have window regulator problems if they have power windows and that could get expensive and there are exhaust rattles that can be easily fixed with new u-bolts and by removing the exhaust manifold heat shield. as long as u take care of it, it will be a great car.

thanks much fastmaxx - how often should I give the engine a tune up? Also, any other information on volkswagen jettas would be appreciated greatly.
