Help from import lovers please!

Good day everyone. I know this may not be the most appropriate place for this, but since it is directly relevant to street racing, it seems at least somewhat appropriate.
I'm dying to gain some knowledge on imports, Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Etc... Is there some place on the net that can educate life long american muscle devoties? I have always been a huge fan of Firebirds/Camaros. But the new things is imports, and I don't want to be missing the fun. So if someone could help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it, so i can get one of my own and start street racing.

to answer your first question. there are magazines out there that can further educate you in the import world. try super street, sport compact car, modified mag, import tuner and turbo. those are all magazines that will further educate you. and you can also stick around here and get a some knowledge.

second question. yes the cars you listed wich are called the DSM's are very good for buildups. just watch the tranny

:iagree: he couldn't be any more right with what he said. if you read alot of posts and just try to get a idea of what people are talking about it will help you alot. Also Grassroots Motorsports is a good mag to look at. It has alot of great cars that just anyone can buy in them plus it even teaches important tips like how to weld and how to save money on building your car. have fun with it and good luck.

The DSMs are a great choice if you want cheap, fast 1/4 mile times.

very well said....except for the first gen DSM's dont see the tranny problem as much. Nice choice in cars :thumbsup:

I wouldnt recomend Super Street or Import Racer at all, very basic, very....OMFG MY STIKORZ ADD 3BILLION THOUSAND HP ROXORZZZ!!!111!!1!...;

Import Tuner focuses more on the visual side, and offers nice eye candy. SCC (Sport Compact Car) is your best for help on actually learning about the real import sceen, not TF&TF crap, and have very nice, very fast, cars. Also, if your looking towards European Imports, look at Euro Car and Euro Tuner.

dsm take well to mods, spend 5g's into a dsm and run 12's all day long no problem.. easlily makes 350+whp with boltons and up graded turbo.. fun cars and awd rules on drag racing.

you should be able to just look around on this forum, wut kind of car do you want, what do you want to do with it? ex. drag, drift, autocross etc. just ask about cars like if you would like an awd, ask wut a good awd would be in your price range and you'll get answers

For the thread starter: The E/T/L (if you put a "z" in Laser again, I'll get upset :p ) is a great, economical platform to start with.

12s have been achieved for under 3k, 13s for under 1k, and 14s come with BASIC mods.

The turbo MR2 is in the 14s stock and I have seen 13.4s with less than $500 invested in a turbo MR2. :D

Pro_am like yourself I was heavy into heavy metal for YEARS, well over a decade! I got one hell of an education when I moved to New Zealand where "imports" are vast and so are shops for them.

While we don't get the Talon's, lazers, and eclispe's, there are some of Japan's hottest baddest cars here. Evo's from the EvoI to Evo VIII, RX7's from series 1 through the new RX8, Skylines galore, WRX's, NSX's, old school VR4's (mitzi galants 1.8L turbo 4wd), RZ Supra's, Silvia S13, S14, S15's, and hosts of others.
Its gotten to the point unless your car is making over 400 bhp you're just another one of the guys. There are plenty of cars {Skyline GTR's, Supra's, Evo's, RX7 Bat's that are making 500+hp} with a few now over the 700hp cruising the streets. It's starting to feel like Japan here lol.

A local tuning shop has been turing out some damn grunty V8's over the past couple of years. Seems quite a few of the V8 boys have had enough of getting their asses handed to them so they are fighting back with supercharges on their daily cars. I know of 12 Holden comadores that are making 550+hp now. Damn Torque Performance lol, and I live at that place always giving the owner grief, mostly because they are the ones that tune my GTR.

I won't start an argument about which is better, MR2s or DSMs, but DSMs (at least first gens) are the cheaper way to go fast. A boost controller alone will get you a 13.9 with a GSX and a good driver (and an abused clutch). Put $1000 into it for the basic mods (I/E, intercooler piping, etc), and you're running low 13s easy. Not to mention the original investment is considerably less. Mind you, I"m not saying MR2s aren't good, and I'm not even saying I'd buy a GSX over an MR2, I'm just saying the GSX is the cheaper way to go.

best bet chill and hang out in this section and you will learn something new about imports every post..

General rule:

Do not listen to the stuff that is said about street racing in Fast and Furious or basically any movie relating to that...those movies base themselves off of real concepts, but are nothing more than an illusion.

Follow the suggestions of the people above as a guideline to learning more about imports and you'll be just fine.
