Rust 1994 T&C vs later generation models?

I am disturbed by the number of third generation T&C and Caravan models I see with serious rust problems compared to my 1994 T&C. My 11 year old van has virtually NO RUST including tailgate and bottom of sliding door, Yet I see any number of 1996-1999 and newer models with significant rust in these areas. I was thinking of trading up to a 2002 or 2003 model but I have a feeling they will not stand up to Minnesota salt nearly as well as my 1994.
