power loss in accelerating?

i just got my license and inherited my dad's 01 eclipse gt. most of my friends with their cars when they're racing shift at redline. when i'm accelerating in the eclipse there's a sudden power loss at just over 5000 rpm. is this just the shifting point in that car or is there something wrong?

I'd say go to a dyno and do a baseline of 3 runs. That will give you a graph of your power curve so you can see what is going on.

i usually shift about there. the max hp is reached around 5500rpms but it seems as though the engine is starving for air. thats why i shift at about 5000

if you wanna go higher, i think you need an intake, w/ the stock system on there, the engine doesn't get hardly any air at all, just look at where the inlet is

ya i've had the problem fixed for a while....i took another look in the engine bay and it turns out the two screws holding the scoop were gone and it was rising up when i would floor it and suck on the hood. I was mixed with depression and happiness that it was so simple of a problem :banghead:

they messed w/ teh screws at the dealership and mine did something similar...it sux, and i was already missing one screw so i just ripped that little bit off and left the airbox

ya i grabbed two screws out of the garage and jammed em in there since im waiting on getting the money for a new intake anyway :naughty:

i could have told you that to start with

well it would have been gladly appreciated

well if you would have explained your problem more thoroughly, then i would have. when mine started doing that, it was happening at about 4000rpms

Hey since we're on this topic...I have a problem with acceleration sometimes like...when i'm accelerating, then take my foot off the pedal to slow down from the car in front of me or something, then go to accelerate again, my car with suddenly lurch forward! Or if i'm sitting at a stop light then go to accelerate, my car will sluggishly start off sometimes, but fly off other times...anyone know why this all happens?!?

its trying to shift to where you need the power, you are simply putting your foot on the gas too hard, try easing onto the gas after braking

well i mean i'll lightly press the pedal to accelerate, then take it off completely to slow down say, if the car in front of me brakes but then moves again, then i'll lightly press the pedal and it seems like it lurches to get back to the speed of where it was before...
I put in a higher grade gas in last monday and since then it's been running a lot smoother, no more lurches...but now it doesnt have the same torque...wtf?!?

in my opinion (and i've been driving automatics since day 1), that is just how automatics work, it has to get back into gear, if it doesn't seem right though, take it in to the dealership or a mechanic and see what they think, as for the higher grade gas, i kno that higher the grade prevents pre-detonation of the fuel, so i don't kno why its running smoother
might work is trying to not go directly from brake to acceleration, let off the brake, give it a second, then hit the accelerator

i don't even brake at all, thats what i'm trying to say...i just take my foot off the gas pedal for a second then put it back on and the car lurches

lol i cant drive them and i cant afford one...i blew all my $ on getting a freakin cool turbo kit! yeah once I tried driving my grandma's manual...couldnt even get it out of the garage!! It was like...wrrrr SNUB! sooooo whatever...no one gives me the time of day to train me anyhow so fluck it! automatic rocks my current world =)

mine's an auto and I was having that problem. Same thing I was hitting the gas too hard. Now like if I come up on someone and I gotta take my foot off the gas to slow down, once I can put my foot on the gas again I barely touch it it seems like and I go right up to where I wanna be. Same as at a light, I've noticed if I just barely touch the gas it takes off way better than if I step on it hard.

Back to the intake thing. I know its kinda the Jew way to do it, but instead of wasting 200 bucks on the K&N typhoon intake, i just used a dremel to cut the bottom off my airbox. Instant, free, unrestricted cold air. Intake sound is much louder, and engine gets more air. Air temperature also plays a crutial role when talking about acceleration...while cold weather is bad for track driving, if you get your tires tacky you can get much better 1/4 mile times in cold weather.

Manuals tranny's arent hard to drive...it just takes someone to explain it to you and some time to get used to it

Yep or have someone drop you off with a manual in the middle of nowhere and no way to get back besides that car. You'll learn real quick

yeah, it sucks tho...around here no one wants to help me learn! Or rather...no one wants to teach me unless they have a crappy car lol
