Fiero 1988, 2,8V6
Iceland

I have this beautiful Fiero 1988 2,8 at home which is a remote place called Reykjavik, Iceland. I wonder if anyone out there can give me directions on where to look for a solution for my problem. I have had my Fiero for some time and as it is really not possible to drive very much from October to April (bad winters) the milage is only 58.000. from day one. There is no actual garage that specializes in Fieros here so I am kind a lost.
The problem can be described as this: My Fiero has lost power, seems to have a breating difficulty and kick down hardly works. This started when I took it out for a serious spin last week. I put the pedal to the floor and "puff". Since then there is this ugly airy sound and the power is terrible. The engine idles well though and feels good when not under pressure. When I try to accelerate it feels like a giant has put his four fingers in the exhaust pipes or something bad (understand the feeling?)
Someone told me to check if the cat was plugged and to put a pipe instead (we have no emission control here). Should I do that? Can that cause this suffocation feeling? I have checked the automatic transmission and that seems to be fine (changed the oil and filter).
Any hints would be really helpful. I can get all parts if needed from the USA without difficulties.
Anyone: HELP!

Check for a clogged air filter, and yes the converter could be at fault as well. If you store the car a lot, then there's a good chance a mouse could have climbed in the airbox or exhaust pipe and made a nest!!!!!
Signs of a clogged catalytic converter:
1. Lack of power, more so when the engine is warm
2. Funny whistling noise comming from the tailpipe
3. (the dead giveaway) Converter glows orange when the car is warmed up
