how long after you start the car and the overheating, min. or longer, is the radiator hot also or just the temp gauge reading hot. Did you r&r the thermostat or a shop. I don't think the smoke is anything to worry about but the more info the better. If your head gasket is blown you'll get coolant in your oil which creates bubbles.

i replace the thermastat my self its in right. it over heats pretty fast now.. at first it tooklike 30 min now its like alomst intstantly now. the radiator is ofcourse hot. the temp guages reads at thew red line. ive head these 3 sujestions over and over 1. water pump 2. head gaskets 3. crakced block.

I've replaced a thermostat with a brand new one only to have it fail. If it's the thermostat the raidator should stay cold and you should over heat very fast. Those bubbles will show up on your dipstick. Not to doubt your mech. abilty but is there any chance of the therm in backwards. There is chance the old therm was only opening partialy and the new not opening at all. The pain threshold for heat is 140 digrees when I said cold above I ment anything up to the pain threshold.

Is there a chance that stopleak has cloged the radiator?

well i double checked on the thermastat before i put everything back together... what do you mean the stopleak has cloged radiator.

How much of the cars history do you know about. There some real crap out there sold to stop leaks in radiators it does work but in time it clogs up the whole radiator. This could have been put in by a previous owner?

i dont know anything about the radiator... but the guy i bought it from kept it in real good shape... when i bougth it, it was all stock. he had papers showing that he went and got the timing belts replace recently ($1000 bill) and other stuff... the car history was clean... the car is in great shape. and i have had it for like 5 months with no problems till now. i think its just the old age geting to it... its a 92 with 120,000 miles on it...

and all i have done most likely did not cause it to this... i have put turbo back exhaust, air filter, and a turbo timer so far. infact i went to go get a new intercooler y pipe, hks blow off vaulve, and a boost control. when i was comeing home it started to over heat about 5 miles down the road to my house...

At 120k the timing belt should have been done twice With the belt they always change the water pump so its not the water pump. Give a quick look on the dipstick for bubbles and I'll do some more thinking.

will it have bubbles when car is cooled??? because it hasnt been driven in like a day... so should i take it down the drive and back and check????..

let the car idle till it over heats (not till it stops it self), then check radiator for intense heat and oil for bubbles get back to me at pann@mric.coop

ok this is weird but get this ok... i was driveing my car to make it heat up ok... and as i was driveing it was geting close to red line so i decide to turn around. just as i turn around and head back the temp drops back to normal infact a few notches cooler... explain that :S

ok check the dip stick (intensively hot lol) no bubbles. the radiator its self was hot also...

Sounds like your new therm. just opened up. Congrats. I would still check for bubbles in your oil.

thermostats have two functions:one to heat the engine up to operating temp fast and to keep it there by slowing the flow of coolant down so it can stay in the radiator long enough for the heat to dissipate. anywho hope everything goes well, I'll be here

you have a bad waterpump, time to get it replaced
for future reference, if you think its the thermostat, just pull the thermostat out of your car and run your car without the thermostat, and no it wont hurt your car any, the function of the thermostat is to close off the coolant from the radiator until your car reaches normal temperatures, and therefore the thermostat is functionless after car has reached normal temperatures. I haven't had a thermostat in my car for a good 4 months, now i will put one in before winter hits, but during the summer, it doesnt matter if you have one or not.

Your sure you have enough coolant in the engine? My truck did the exact same thing when the heater core broke and leaked all the coolant into the cab. It would get hot enough so the coolant would boil over, then it would be able to pump some, it would cool back down. Repeat.
Check that first. But its probably your water pump.

ok the coolant is good and the water pump was replaced at 110,000 miles. something is working right and then yet its not. i drove it to my grand parents house, about 15 miles there, and the temp level stayed where its supposed to stay (in the middle) as i pull into their drive i sit for min. then as i pull out of the drivethe temp level begins to rise as im geting on to the highway it was almost at the redline as it slowly drops makeing its way to the middle. as i come back into town its normal agian. then about 2 blocks away from my house it starts to rise. as i pull into my drive its almost red line... so i opened my hood and shut it off... why is it being so contrary?

just take the thermostat completely out of the car, that way you can diagnose to whether or not it is the thermostat
if its still overheating, make sure the coolant level is topped off, radiator fans are working (will only cause overheating at idle), usually if you are moving and your car is overheating, its cause the coolant isn't getting into the radiator either because the thermostat is locking up or your waterpump is not pumping properly, and that is the only two reasons. So take your thermostat out of your car, and drive it around, if its still overheating, either the waterpump you put in is faulty, or you have a bad head gasket
