2003 CX model
The manual says that I can change the key entry notification modes so that the horn makes a sound when I lock and unlock the vehicle. right now, only the lights flash.
They say you can enter the programming mode by inserting the key, turning to the on position with the vehicle in park and holding the Odometer reset button for 2 seconds.
I get nothing. I've tried it with the the vehicle running, not running, doors open closed etc...
Any clues?

Read carefully you don't program the key but the remote door control.
First you turn the ignition on and press the lock on the door remote control, then it will show driver 1 or 2 depends which remote of the two you have in hand if you have 2.

This is an old thread but has anyone had any luck with following the directions in the owner's manual? So far I have had no luck. I want to change a couple of items. Is the order of operations correct as listed in the manual, or is there some strange way you have to hold your tongue to get it to work?
On the good side:
Programming in a couple of extra keys was no problem.:)
I have tried to enter program mode with both the original key and the copies. -No luck...
Thanks!

This function is set using the mode button below your cluster. You have to push the mode button till it states personalization.
What MODE button? The following are the instructions in the owners manual. The trip reset button works so it is not a faulty switch, and the vehicle definitely knows when the shifter is in park.
1- Turn the ignition Key to ON with the gearshift in Park. I have tried both ON and actually starting the engine.
2- Press and hold the trip/reset button next to the odometer for two seconds while the odometer is in the odometer mode. I have held the button for up to 15 seconds.
3- PROGRAM MODE message will appear in the message center. Nothing appears but the big battery warning indicator if the key is ON, nothing at all if engine is running.
*Then the ambiguous instruction... If you have the remote keyless entry system (they all have it -standard equipment???) you must press the lock button. (WHEN) This lets the system know which transmitter is being personalized, because each can be personalized differently. Are you supposed to push it and THEN the program indicator comes on? Or are you supposed to push it AFTER the program indicator comes on. Of course if the program indicator does not come on this is moot.
-I think these instructions were translated from Chinese or something.
btw- I do not have DIC -hehe -Just the plain jane version that comes on the CX. Personally I HATE leather seats so the base model was my only choice.

Does your cluster look like this one?
http://www.geocities.com/bustedsocket/auto/Rendycluster.gif
The square box between the tach and speedo is your DIC. And you should see these 2 buttons below your cluster.

I believe all Rendy have a DIC which is in the cluster. Little square box
You should have 2 buttons below the cluster on the left side.
That is incorrect. The base models do not have the DIC. Check out a base CX 03 model on your lot. The new models may all have the DIC tho, don't know... I did not want one if the upper models because they all seemed to have leather seats and the third row of seats. I did not want either one. I hate leather seats. I can't understand why anyone would want them. They are as bad as the old vinyl seats. -Yecch! The leather seats in my Father in Laws Caddy aren't too bad if you start the car and let them cool down or heat up before you get in but they still are slippery and uncomfortable.

The DIC is in the tachometer. I do not have that box in the tachometer.
The box at the top between the Tach and speedo is the Message Center.
I do not have those two buttons.

You are right on the location of the Di in the cluster. I was reading the service manaual when I read that. I thought it wasn't there but I used the service manual.
The only other way I know to set the person settings is to use a tech 2 and adjust the settings that way. I'm not sure if it is in the tech 2 since we don't have much need to set any of these settings.
I'll try to look around the manuals tonight when i have some time.

I typed out the instructions from the manual in post#5 above. Supposedly I can program many of the functions and they list instructions for each in the owners manual. Of course if they work as well as the instructions for entering the program mode I may be in trouble.:banghead:

I found some time to research this and I have bad news for you.
A running change was made in December, 2002, eliminating the ability to customize automatic door locks as well as other features within vehicle customization/personalization. This only applies to a vehicle without the Driver Information Center. Furthermore, if a vehicle had this ability previously, it will lose this capability if the BCM is replaced or BCM software is updated for any reason.
This is a change from what is indicated in the Owners manual. Therefore, the ability to customize the following can be permanently lost: Automatic Door Lock/Unlock, Delayed Locking, Entering Programming Mode, Exiting Programming Mode, Headlamp Exit Delay, Remote Driver's Door Unlock, and Remote Lock and Unlock Confirmation.

Why would they disable a feature? I was happy to see it in the manual because I am old enough a lot of things that new vehicles do "automatically" irritates the living hell out of me. :angryfire
This vehicle was built 10/15/2002 and the VISS does not show any flashes but it does show a recall(?) for a liftgate lock kit PN-10351118, Labor operation V1028-03030 on 08/04/2004. Maybe the body computer was flashed at that time?
One of the problems with the vehicle is the fact that the rear hatch won't open unless you push the button inside or on a remote. That is a real pain when you are loading the vehicle and don't want to leave the gate open while you get another load. My wife carries a remote but I don't because my keyring is big enuf already. Even then fumbling with keys every time is bogus. I am always afraid something in my pocket would push the buttons anyway.
Can the program settings be changed by some sort of dealer device? My wife wants the headlight delay turned off and the locking delay off. I would hate to have to go in and physically rewire a fairly new vehicle. I have done it b4 tho with a brand new vehicle and Ford copied my wiring changes the next year. -LOL
