Easy to reset the door lock codes but not worth doing. In the event that your battery goes dead, your codes automatically revert back to the original. If you don't know what the original codes are then you indeed have a problem. Without the original code, it is probably impossible to set a different code. If you have the original owner's manual it tells you how to change the code, program new keys, and program the romote control.

Regarding the Remote Control: Buy one of the generic ones at Pep Boys. You'll get two for the price of one compared to what you'll pay at the dealer! The quality is the same, maybe even better. The Pep Boys remote seems to have twice the range than my original.

Did anyone warn you about disconnecting your battery? If your keys are anywhere within reception range when you disconnect and then reconnect the battery (there is a coded chip in the key), the key code is automatically deleted: your key won't start the car! The dealer will place your keys into a radio proof container prior to doing a battery change. I used a small covered metal can, placed my keys onto a folded paper towel, and then placed that can onto another folded paper towel inside a covered cooking pot prior to pulling the battery.

Oh, another thing: You should have a total of 3 keys. It takes two programmed keys to program a third new key. If you only have two keys and lose one, then you're screwed! The dealer would have to program a second key for you, and that would cost more than if you simply purchased a third key and programmed it yourself to keep as a spare. The charge to me by the dealer for that "service" was $51!! My used Mountaineer only came with one key and one remote.

Hey, my memory must be failing me. I just remembered where you can find the driver's door key unlock code. Pull the cover off the access door to the jack and lug wrench. The key code should be found toward the front of that area on the computer box. Go take a look. If you can't find the owner's manual, e-mail me. I'll make copies of the pages to change the codes and also how to program the keys and remote and e-mail them back to you. And hey...I'm only charging you $250!....JUST KIDDING!

*Update: John, I hope you were able to read those pages okay. The book is so stiff that it wouldn't lay flat on my scanner.

My wife corrected me on the "service" to program a new key: "No, it wasn't $51, that's what they wanted for another remote. It was $140 with the used car 10% discount, but that included a new key." So apparently we got burned too, but I just forgot.
