Iridium Spark Plugs

Denso (http://www.densoiridium.com) have some Iridium Spark plugs, and I've heard reports that these puppies will increase performance and throttle response somewhat... Can anyone help with some more info?

a) Is this true?
b) Does anyone know what plugs the H22a uses?
c) How MUCH better are they than, say, NGK Platinums?

I read on one the good magazines that they dyno'd them and got i think it was about 5 hp to the wheels. so i guess it's true!

I thought that NGK made some Iridium Sparks themselves? I've seen the ads in the magazines. I'm not sure if they do much, but I believe they cost like $20 each or something :eek: and are more suited to harder driving, and likely to last longer.

Denso reccommends their part #IK20 for the H22A4 with the gap set to 0.044" (1.1mm) with the stock ignition.

If your engine is fairly stock (only bolt-ons) and the OEM NGK platinums are in good condition, I honestly doubt you'll see much of a power increase. But they won't hurt, and they seem to be well made from the reports I've heard. And they should last for forever and a day. They can be had for around $15 each.

from what you said fritz it sounds like that if you have an aftermarket ignition you should gap your plugs different. is this true?

If you can make greater voltage, yes it's true. Once the spark has jumped the gap additional voltage makes no significant increase in spark size, but increasing the gap along with enough voltage to jump it certainly does. Companies love to show pictures of how "hot" the spark is and so forth, but I've seen better evidence that increasing the gap with a strong coil makes much more difference in power output than just increasing the voltage. Also remember this is assuming there's something inadequate about the current setup, which if the motor is NA and fairly stock is not the case.

how about the part# for the h23a1?? do you have that?

So basically we're stalemated about any performance increases... some say yes, others say no... I'd be very interested if anyone can find the figures for putting them in a stock(ish) H22A..

Cool. They haven't updated their web catalog with that part number yet, so as you said, you'll probably have to call them or a dealer. :cool:
