It will be dry to the touch in about 15 minutes depending on the paint. Enamels will dry in 15 minutes, Acrylics in about 5 minutes, and Lacquers in about 1 minute.

What kind (brand) of paint will you use ?

Btw your info are wrong geofroley, Enamel take 6 hours to dry. Look the F.A.Q.

dry to the touch don't mean it's safe to work with it. The oil of you finger will stick on the paint and will dry with the paint. The best thing to ruin a paint job, is rushing and don't let everything dry.

The Fastest paint to dry is Acrylic, and they are safe to work with after 30 minutes

Even that is not completely correct. I just finished polishing my acrylic paint job - after two weeks of drying time. I got carried away with polishing one end and held the other end "too tightly". My finger print is embossed nicely on the door. Grrrr!

Even mroe reasons not to use enamel. But yeah I know dry to the touch isn't good to work with. That's why I put it in bold.

if u use Tamiya/any brand of testors, or specific model car paint, give it 5 hours to dry, some times they dry quicker, but better safe than sorry

if u use paints like the $1 walmart paint, etc like that, theyre usually dry with in 15-20 minutes max

Thats a rareity. I have had to paint with acrylic-lacquers, sand and polish in less than a week before, and I have no problem.
