Can anyone help?... my 97 corolla is losing oil and i dont know where it is going... i checked the radiator and it isnt leaking into there, however sometimes if i am accelerating greatly i can smell burning oil. Also there is no noticable oil leaking onto the ground and if it burning the oil it isnt noticable no smoke is coming from the exaust. ... so if anyone could please help me it would be greatly appreciated.

You did not mention how many miles on your car and howmuch oil that you have to put, anyway if you have high mileage (over 100K miles) the piston rings probably worn at this mileage and possibly they have lost some of their tension against the cylinder walls. The lower ring set is called an oil control ring which acts as a squeegee to wipe off the extra oil used in cylinder lubrication. If you are not seeing any blue smoke when starting or while driving, I have to guess that the rings are the cause, remember that at the speeds that the engine runs a very little amount that slips by will add up to a quart soon.

piston rings
Thanks for replying... there is about 83000 mile on my car and after about 3000 miles there is no longer any oil on the dip stick.. learned that the hard way... also would i be able to replace the piston rings myself i am a newby at modifing anything.. or will i have to bring it somewhere to be replace, and how much would that cost me?? Thanks!

There is actually a TSB out from toyota that says the engines had tendency to sludge oil. YOu might want to check under your valve cover.

Have someone drive behind you and then hammer the car, they should see blue smoke comming out when the engine is at a higher rpm. If thats the case, your rings are worn. I wouldnt worry about it much, just switch to cheap 10w as you will start going through enough of it.
