i own a 99 ford ranger with 46k miles on it.
It is acting very strange. when i start the car it begins to idle very rough and usually stops. If i press the gas pedal down it revs up but then stops and rerevs and keeps doing that cycle. I changed the fuel filter and it still does it. I have filled the car 2 times since this started up with high quality gas. i added fuel cleaner and injector cleaner.
I thought it could be a vacuum leak however this problem is intermittant.
after a random time of this consant reving while my foot is flooring the gas it will all of a sudden start acting normal and rev fine.
can a vacuum leak be intermittant? it could be running fine for about 40 mins then start up with the rev die rev die thing.
any ideas before I try to take it into the shop?

is check engine light on? if so, you could have a auto patrs store scan code and post here.almost everyone here has access to the codes wich greatly help in diognosing your problem.

no the check engine light is not on when it is running. or after it stalls.

dose your check engine light come on at all when you turn on key? maybe light is burned out.it sounds more like a fuel problem than anything.what condition are the spark plugs in?light tan color is good.

you might also want to check mas air flow sensor and air temp sensor( both located in intake hose from air filter box to throdel body

man i just got back from the mechanic shop. IT was the Mass air flow sensor and throttle control sensor.
481 dollars later I have a workin car. I am not a mechanic but I am mechanicly able to do alot. I have put in replacement brakes or overhead cam shaft and rockers but this stuff kills me! I have no way to check some things and I hate having to drop 500 bucks to fix 230$ worth of parts..
OK now that I am done griping with todas car tech, I say many thanks to all for helping me out.
