Motor Mounts

How much of an improvement does new motor mounts really give? DO i need to replace both, if not which would be the better of the two to replace? Will i need an engine hoist inorder to change? Thanx

I would change both.
A hoist would be nice, but is not needed.
The diffenence is noticable. It seems like you are quicker and more resonsive when you push the gas

I have limited tools, i won't need to lift th engine or anything like that?

you have quicker response from the motor because w/ less engine roll there is better power delivery to tires and you may need an engine lift but could probably just do it w/ a good floor jack placed correctly under the motor (not on the oil pan) and do one motor mount at a time

hey jmoneydtb,
What do you think of the t3/t4 turbos?
Are you gonna do your internals first?

jmoneydtb
07-17-2004, 04:46 PM
well...they are really good turbos from what i hear. i want to do a little more research on them...from what i understand about them currently though is that almost anything can spool them up and they are good for crazy amounts of power. the turbo kit that i have found comes able to bolt on and go w/o having to do internals as long as you only run from 5-7psi. but even if i get that turbo kit before i do the internals i will eventually do a rebuild to make the my motor hold a lot more boost say about 16-18psi. but that would be in the far future...im thinking i must just get another car and use the sunfire as a beater cause its having some issues right now, but i may also build it just to see what i can get out of it. see if i can get a magazine right up or something...lmao! i think its fun to build motors and see how well you can make them perform.

can one be done then the other without support?

jmoneydtb

I think that the power you would be able to get out of a 2.4 would be in around 300. Did some figuring this weekend.
Now will the rest of the car be able to hold up?

well...i really wouldnt trust the internals too far w/ boost is the only thing...and you may want the extra strength motor mounts at least to be able to deliver a lot more power. and id definately drop it and put it on some rims and yokohama avs 100s or scorcers. also you would prolly want to use a sunfire w/ a manual transmission. but sometimes you gotta work with what youve got.

My car has the 5spd.
Auto's are crap. Why buy a sporty car and miss out on all the shifting?

well...i didnt really buy the car, it was giving to me by my sister who had just gotten a new car and my car had just died and i didnt have the money at the time to fix it or buy my own car so...i got stuck w/ an auto.

Thats rough.
I test drove one before I bought mine and it was crap.
Better than walking though!

Did you notice a big difference with the 2" exhaust and CAI?
The supra sounds like a fun ride. A buddy of mine had a stock one and it went like stink!

jmoneydtb

well the 2" exhaust took me from a 11.0 in the 1/8 to a 10.7 so thats definately a help. the true cai i havent actually track tested yet, but they way its set up i cant run it on the street because of no filter so...i'll probably test it out when my friend w/ the supra comes back down from virginia

Do you have any major mods done to the internals of the sunfire?

jmoneydtb
07-21-2004, 12:20 AM
not yet...but now im kinda planning to. i would really love to get my hands on a wrecked out 2.2l auto sunfire...i dont care what year just same engine and tranny and take the tranny and bolt it up to my car to rid it of its no reverse issue. then i would save up and build the piss out of the other motor. crank, rods, pistons, rings, valves, springs, port and polish, bored and sleeved then drop that in the fire. then later on turbo it...i think i had my original thinking all backwards. because i could do an internal build and get the motor up to 200hp or so then slap on a turbo kit and w/ the built motor run about 16 psi and have around 375 hp or so. that would be a bad ass sunfire. even if its an auto! lmao

Sounds like it would be great.
Im on the lookout for a sunfire/cav fram and body to do a swap on the motor. I wanna put in a 3.8sc and don't wanna rip apart my daily driver.

i think the first thing im gonna do is get those motor mount inserts from rksport.com...just so i can be a lil more go for now...but i really want a wrecked sunfire...so if you find one for sale for cheap...through me a link!

I'll keep a look out for you.
What are the main parts that have to be good on it?

jmoneydtb
07-22-2004, 12:40 AM
tranny definately and no holes in the block or anything...and it would be really awesome if only the drivers side was damaged...but thats being a lil picky so...but as long as the tranny is good and the motor is at least in running shape.

I was looking in the Cav forum and there was a guy parting out his. 2.4L in it though.
I think he already got rid of the car.
Try some of the wreckers in your area, there are lots of sunfires and cav's that are wrecked.
I found a tranny out of a 2001 with 7000km on ti for $1100cdn at the wreckers.

ON rksport.com they have two motor mounts, one for 2.2 upper, other 2.4 lower. Does this make a difference if you are putting them both on a 2.2L?

Robbie1
07-23-2004, 01:08 PM
On the site, they have a lower 2.2 (part number 02035447) and an upper 2.2 ( part number 02031120)
That is what you need for a 2.2L.

if i don't have a floor jack, or an engine hoist, will it be possible to change the motor mounts? The only thing remotly close to a jack i have is the tire jack that came with my car(the little bow looking thing)!
