Ok...
Anybody know anything about Rotary engines?
I need some info.
The RX-7 has a rotary engine right?
Thanks.
Any amount of info would do.

Yes, RX-7's do have rotary engines. And to learn all you need to know go here:http://www.howstuffworks.com/rotary-engine.htm

No, they are simply different. Very few moving parts, very high redline capacity, but lower total displacement ability assuming you use a maximum of 3 rotors, challenging lubrication issues, and a naturally poor combustion chamber efficiency in terms of the complete burning of fuel.

...the apex seals are difficult to maintain, LOTS of vacuum lines, uneven cooling, were some of the issues with the last Mazda rotories. I agree, its not better, its not worse, its just different.

Yeah, it just still amazes me that they have 250hp from a 1.3:D

that's not yet official cus the RX-8 isn't released, but that is the published HP #s. how's that for incomplete efficiency.

Yes rotarys are different but you have got to admit that they do make unbelievable horse power for such a small capacity engine.
I have have had a few rotarys, i have pumped lots of money into all my cars. I have even been circuit racing my RX-3 for quite a few years as well.
I think the best thing about the rotary engine is the physical size of the motor. (basically a 4 gallon drum for a 2 rota) and there light weight.
They are a cheap form of horse power for what they are. (dont get me wrong all forms of motor sport are expensive but the rotary is still resonable for the power to money spent ratio).
You cant really relate to the problems of the old rotary engines where the APEX seals and water seals used to shit them selves before 20000 miles.
Mazda has pumped a lot of money into making the rotary a very reliable car, and has proven that by win lots of prestigious awards like the LE MANs race where they killed the porches, jags and other proto types and then after that victory they band them.
I have the respect for all types of motors but i think you cant go past a ROTA

Yeah they do produce amazing horsepower for the size/compacity.
But I like the honda's inline-4s better:D

I enjoy rotaries...
But i've heard horror stories abot 13Bs going ka-boom...
A friend has rebuilt his 3 different times...
But..if properly built and maintained - rotaries ownz j00!
Type-R -- i enjoy hondas i-4s as well...but a nice, Nissan i-6 TT is much more preferred :D

Oh ho... Rotarys ARE good. Lightweight. Produce nice horsepower. The only draw back is that they have to be maintained because the engine "rotates" and this creates frictio so it has to be constantly maintained for top notch performance.:D

Yes absolutely, thankfully there is no rotation or friction in a piston motor

Texan
What about the crank shaft that rotates, and what about the piston sliding up and down the bore doesnt that create friction.???????????
Can you imagine how much force there is needed to move the piston up the bore then stop it (although for a split second) then send the piston back down the bore again. The forces being pushed on the conrod and crank shaft are huge.
The rotary doesnt have these huge changes in force direction because they rotate in the same direction all the time, and there for can produce higher horse power, REV higher and accelerate faster than a motor of equivalent size. (Remebering a 13B is only 1.3ltr).

sorry, but I can't NOT reply to a thread on rotors :D
I've driven Civics for the past 9 years (including my first car being a 1st gen Turbo) but after being with my b/f for 2 years, its opened my eyes to the fact that there is much more power to be had from a turbo rotor than a piston.
He has a S3 Rx7 13b turbo which recently took out his division of Horsepower Hero at Summernats with 433 rwhp on pump fuel.
http://board.performanceforums.com/forums/attachment.php?postid=38482
It's a helluvalot more power than I'd know what to do with on the street but it was built to cut it on the track and still be totally streetable. It has done an 11.1 with a turbo that had gaping holes in the exhaust wheel! and now that it's fixed, the car should be running a 10 soon.

I love driving the 7 but Civic... it's in the blood ;)

Maintained! not more than any other loved car.
I actually had a mates R100 in the shed it was a 10a with a 13b turbo setup, on 15PSI Id say it would have to make around 220 to 240hp. Good for 13s and 12s with slicks and it would do it with ease. Would it not rota ronnie.
For such a small engine they have amazing power, consider if you times that engine by two to make a two litre youd be pumping out 450hp not half bad.

If he was using the older 13B then that is understandable. They aren't much good past about 400 Hp. Mazda has improved uppon their engines greatly since then.
My brother has a billion links to rotary sites. He is all about some rotaries. I will post the links if I can find them.
I have an Rx-7 and a civic. The Rx-7 is just sitting there right now though, I have to fix some electrical stuff. The 87-89s have weak solders. I want to build it up, but I don't even have enough to do that to my civic.

it's my b/f's. The turbo's back on it and it's going out to HITmans to get tuned tonight.
I'll suggest the tech stuff to him. He's still working on the site and a few other things at the moment

Talk about getting way OT!
any way.
The princess was before the skyline, and Nissans first 6cly car.
The Early Cefiros, (also the Cedric) where skyline based, and sold along side the Maxima in Japan. Then when the previous shape maxima came out it was given a chrome grill and the Cefiro name, and replaced the Maxima. There was also, for a very limited time, a RWD V6 powered Cefiro.
