what is the bore of a 327

Ok, there isn't really an engine thread.. so I thought I would post it here, since the engine is in our camaro.

When we bought it, the buy told us it was a 327 bore out to a 350.

Now.. I might be wrong, but the bore on a 327, and a 350 are the same right (This is stock) and it is the stroke that is different.. right? Is there any way to tell if it was bored out.. by marks or something (we don't have anything to measure with.. ecept a tape measure) so if it was a 327 bore out to a 350.. how big would the bore be then?

I really hope im not confusing you guys

Also, how do you figure out the stroke of the engine? do you measure how far the piston moved from TDC to BDC?

Thanks!!

Also.. lets say it was bore out to a 350.. do you guys think we should put 350 side markers on it.. or put the 327 markers on it?

350 bore is 4.000 inches and stroke is 3.480. Indeed the 327 and 350 do share a bore size, so it would seem to be that the difference is in displacement. I'm not sure if you measure stroke by the travel of the piston or if you measure stroke by the center of the rod journal to the center of the crank main bearing journal. I'm sure someone who posts here will know and be able to answer that for you.

As far as I know, you can't bore a 327 passed .060" over. Which means you can't bore a 327 to a 350. You are correct, what makes a 327 different then a 350 is the stroke. The 327 comes with a 3.25" stroke while the 350 is 3.48". The TDC to BDC is what determines the stroke of an engine. Since you got it out of a Camaro and it is the stock engine then it should have the medium main journals like a 350 unlike the earlier 327s with the small main journals. Hope I helped you out.

The engine was said to come form, a 1967 Impala ss.. I will do some research.

My dad's friend had a chevelle (I think) and he bored it out (WAY too much) and made the cylinder wall too thin, and when they were goin down the street.. they hear clunk, and the engine stoped. heh

what would the CI be if it was bored out .06"?

327 overbored .06 = 336.6
350 overbored .06 = 360.4

and yes, the 302, 327, 350, all used the 4.0in block. the 302 used the 283 crank with 3in stroke, the 327 shared the 307cid 3.25in stroke, while the 350 had a 3.48in stroke.

but also keep in mind tht many people dont understand the difference between bore and stroke. perhaps the person took the 327 block and put a 350 crank and rotating assembly in it. and just stroked it, instead of boring it out. and they just use boring cuz they know it means makein it bigger.

Thanks :)

I was gonna make a comment on that "Maby they just thought since they increased the CI.. it was bored out. So, it is probably stroker.

BTW,.. a guy my dad knows has a 89 Iroc with 3 miles on it (From running it down the track).. just thought you would like to know :)

I guess, he has a couple other camaros too.

But, what do you guys think about which side markers I should get.. 327, or 350?

I mean, the car was a 327.. but it has a 350 engine in it.

SO what do you guys think?

well, im building a 302 out of a 350, that will actually be 327cid, but im running 302 badges ;) cuz i want my Z28 powered by a 302 like they did for the first gen camaros.
