I have a 1989 Cavalier 2.0L 4 CYL. Automatic, fuel injected w/ throttle body and when I crank it up it runs fine, but when I shift to another gear, it sputters and dies. I have replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs and also have tried disconnecting the mass air sensor and adding fuel injection cleaner to my gas, but nothing seems to help. I have bought a new fuel filter but I don't think thats it because the one that is on the car seems to be in good condition. I have even taken the fuel injector on the car out and looked at it. When I drive it, It stars out fine but then starts sputtering again and then clears out if I let up off the gas pedal. Can someone please tell me whats wrong with this thing as I am in desperate need to get this car running again. Please respond ASAP and if need be, send me an email to [email protected] and label the message 1989 Cavalier or something like that so I know what it is.

This car has no Mass Air Sensor.
Now for the cure. Look under the air filter box. You will see an electrical plug on the transmission. Disconnect this plug. This is the TCC Solenoid. It Locks the Torque Converter Clutch.
