Advertising down the left side.

It sucks.


What changed since yesterday that required banner ads on the site? If it is out of necessity, fine. If it is to save a buck here and there, please lose it as it detracts from the already weak aesthetics of this board.

Please move to "Hot and not", I must have been distracted by the dating sevice banner. :rolleyes:

Again, if you have a good reason, go for it...I know a board this large has its expenses to be covered.

With the recent growth of traffic and frequent displays of "server too busy" message, we need to begin planning on upgrading/adding servers. Depending on how this works (I need a small test period to see how effective this will be), it may be quite lucrative, paying for the servers.

Well I dont mind having banners on top and bottom, but to the left is annoying. Especially because I am at work, all advertisements are surf controlled. So it's just moved everything to the right side and now I have to scroll right

would moving the ad to the right side be any better?

keep it off the sides, its a real pain to look at can you move it to the bottom? or better yet loose it if possible?

Not exactly... didn't you have a banner over there once before a while back and no one liked it?

But to the left is deffinately terrible because of my small monitor... can't view a full post anymore without scrolling over.

Also... the google search bar... I keep confusing it for the 'search thread' search bar... it's starting to get anoying too.

It would be ok if the server busy didn't show up at the bottom of the page(where i cant see it) and there wasn't a huge white blank spot all the way to the bottom of the page under the ad.

having the banner on the left is kinda annoying, but not as annoying as getting 'server too busy' all the time. so if it means that banner will have to be put on the left to expand the server, than so be it, i'll get use to it eventually.

The google search bar is perfect. If you really need sponsors wihout affecting the placement of the screen as it was, i say go with a pop-up, I'm sure it wouldnt be as annoying as the banner on the left side. But the pop-up only comes when you get to the main site, if it opens after every widnow, that will become aggrivating

I suggest moving it somewhere away from the side, like the top or the bottom...it makes everything start to look squished.

If it helps, I'm willing to donate money and help AF get servers. Anyone else? Maybe more money coming in from us equals smaller advertisements.

let's keep this banner on for about a day...

I would PREFER, not like, the ads to be on the right side. This would actually not be bad at all if you could fill the whole side with the ads

i know im a New member here and all...but i dont like this Ad thing at all!! I dont care that there are ads...i just hate the position of the ad. A pop up would be nice..considering ive got a pop up blocker so i dont have to see it :icon16: . The ad is just in a terrible position. Im sure everyone here wouldnt mind having the ad if it means getting rid of the Server too busy message (which I noticed has been popping up ALOT more recently. One other thing. If your going to keep the ads...at least go with something that pertains to Automotive stuff. Online dating?? Why would anyone here be intrested in that?

Considering the young age demographic of AF visitors, I think the online dating is pretty relevant, but of course not ideal.

I am working on removing the side ad and experimenting with placing horizontal banners within the threads, as lamehonda has suggested.

What do you think of the idea?

but i have no problem with it on the left side...i just move the screen over...but incorporating it within the thread is a great idea....so lamehonda soes have some good use :lol:

I find them even more annoying than when they were on the right hand side. The giant white space draws the eyes to where there is no content. I don't mind ads, so long as they are not obtrusive.

incorporating them into the thread may not be such a good idea. When people post pictures in their threads it may just be overwhelming to see so many things in one thread going on. I guess id have to see it to be able to judge correctly though so maybe my opinions are off base.

I think that people will learn to ignore them. Do you guys get paid per click? or do you just a set price to have them there? Because I am ready to click away. And people here know that I am one of the top clickers on the site.

that banner installed tracking cookies on my comp and everytime the banner refreshed the cookie came back!

Anyways, now that I actually have some money I can donate to the AF Server Fund if need be.

an ad every five posts wouldn't be bad. I mean, that's like 3 per page. If it's good stuff, hell ya I'll click. I use those sponsored links at the top a lot. But, along with putting them horizontally in the threads, (kinda goin on MacDaddy's idea) should sig pics be limited to a certain size, period? The sigs are bad enough as is, but adding banners (advertisement banners, Raz) in between would make it look all cluttered.

I'm all for horizontal ads, completely against vertical ads, but if the ads are to go IN the threads, then, IMO, something needs done about sigs.

I browse other boards with ads on the left, in fact one of the boards I browse has my ad on it which I pay the site owner for. I admit its annoying at first but after awhile you get used to it. If we need to put ads up here then I am in full support of it. Otherwise I'd be happy to donate again.

I don't mind having the ads on the left (or the right). The biggest problem I'd have is if they blink, cycle colors or otherwise make a visual nusiance of themselves. I don't need more things flashing at me.
