2004 Intake Kits

I was thinking about installing a intake kit on my 4runner, and was wonder it the 03 kit would fit the 04 4runner. Both seem to have the same engine size (v-6, 4 liters). Has anyone tried this? He is the model I was looking at:

Gadget did not have good luck with K&N products:

Particularly, read the part about the K&N FIPK and what poor engineering went into the design.
"The FIPK also cause damage to my 4Runner. The overall design of it does not allow enough give to allow for the movement of the engine in its mounts. The FIPK uses the same mounting points as the stock air box and I found that the FIPK had pulled the mounting bolt right through the fender mounting point, ripping and tearing the sheet metal. I do not recommend anyone install this set up in his or her vehicle. I had a reduction in power with my supercharger, and damage to my 4Runner as a result of installing the FIPK. I reinstalled my modified air box."

"The K&N FIPK beats the stock box by .6 HP in 1st, 2.8 in 2nd, but looses to the stock box by 3.2 in 3rd for an average loss of .06 HP"
After these results, I would not buy K&N anything.

It you have the same model engine then it should fit, unless Toyota moved the engine or placed it a certain that is different than the 03 models.
BrainR.: I kinda find it hard to belive that the K&N FIPK is the problem... I would say if anything it wa a faulty install.... all of TRD filters are actually K&N, so for K&N to sell faulty products like that I highly doubt that Toyota/TRD would put their name on it and sell it themselves.
I persoanlly have had alot of ppl who come to me saying that they just product a product and installed it like the instructions says and it messed up their ride.... only to find out that they installed it wrong and put the blame on the company that made the part.

In his article, Gadget described how he consulted with TRD on this issue and they agreed with him.
"I was told by the people at TRD that they have tested the FIPK and they saw a reduction in power. I later ran my own dyno test and found this to in fact be true. You do have to admit, it does look faster, right??

It is likely that TRD has their own specifications for any product that this company makes for them. TRD certainly does not sell this product - Particularly when they found no power increase, as they told Gadget.
I still say - Don't buy from K&N. Their engineering is suspect. Truly, it makes no engineering sense to me that you would design an intake that bolts to both the engine and the body with no flexibility or give in the system. This is asking for problems, just as Gadget found out. The engine has to move relative to the body. There is no give in the K&N system. Bad design. Note that the Toyota design has a flexible hose connecting the air box with the engine-mounted portion. That is the way to do it.

Wait - Let other people do the testing for you. Keep an eye on TRD and AFE products (AFE makes the current TRD air intake products for 3rd generation 4Runners) and find some significant positive dyno results not published by the manufacturer. Preferably, an off-road racer or serious gear-head. Don't get in the mode of spending alot of money for little or no hp. Wait for one with significant gains.

What exactly is it that you are looking for? Extra HP? You won't get anything from a K & N filter. They suck! You might as well just take the filter out of your 4-runner. The K & N will allow just as much dirt in your engine!!

That is sort of the same conclusion Gadget came to in his experience.
