Malibu 2000 fuel system problem

Here is the gist:
I've had my check engine coming on and off at a regular basis
A couple days ago my engine shut off completely on the highway and had all the hallmarks of running of gas
A highway administration guy poured 2 gallons in my tank (note: car was on slop going uphill): engine didn't start
At the mechanic the fuel pressure was almost inexistent but once they poured two additional gallons the engine started and the fuel pressure was restored to normal
Any ideas????
Also, how is the fuel system working on Malibu 2000 (I have no clue since I'm just a computer geek). :banghead:
Any help will be welcomed!

sounds like it might be a weak fuel pump, it would have a harder time pumping when the level in the tank is lower

Thanks!
By the way where does the fuel pump sit in a Malibu?

It's like all the rest of the cars nowadays...it's in the tank. You have to drop the entire tank to replace it and it will run you in the neighborhood of $250...
