mustang failure

I was driving 65 mph on the freeway when I decided to speed up to pass a truck. When I gave the car gas the RPMs went up but the car did not accelerate at all. I assumed that there was a problem with my 5th gear so I pushed the clutch in to put the car in 4th gear. However when I did that there was a loud bang and I saw pieces of my car hit the freeway in my rear view mirror. I lost all power to the engine and my clutch became useless. I had it towed to a local Ford dealership and their service department said that I had blown the tranmission which tore bolts out of my engine block and broke my catalytic converters. they estimated it would cost $13,700 to fix.
The car was only 4 years old and only had 47,000 miles on it.

OUCH!
13+K for an engine and transmission job? Are they nuts?! Get some other estimates.

Tap the tranny bolt holes on the block, Rebuild or buy new manual, New clutch/PP, New hi-flow cat h-pipe is a lot less than $13,000

Yup, helicoil the threads. Get new trans (if peices hit the interstate I doubt you will be rebuilding it). Centerforce has nice clutches, pressure plates, and throwout bearings. Tons of companies sell cats, h/x-pipes, catbacks, ect. Probably be about a $1500 job max if you do it yourself, depending on what you buy and where of course.

Wow, I'm sorry man. Sounds like you blew the hell out of your clutch. You always hear the horror stories about it, but never realize how bad it can be. What vehicle is it?

dealer's trying to rip you off, real bad. what year is this car? from your post i'd say '00... how could that blow a tranny like that with reasonably normal driving? unless you beat on it constantly that simply doesn't happen... a part of me wants to say LEMON, but i could be wrong.
anyway, if you must fix it do it yourself... if you live in SE Michigan i'll even help you out
good luck

I work for a Ford Dealer that is a price that says they don't want to work on it! Go get some estimates from some other places.

Well I found someone to fix it for $6,000. But I still feel that I was screwed over by Ford. I was not out racing and there is no way that a transmission should go out at 47,000 miles on a 2000 mustang GT under normal driving conditions. Unfortunatly, I do not have the knowlege or know how to try and fix it on my own.

whats the warrantee on the car? 36K i presume? sorry to hear what happened. the answer i get whenever mine breaks is "well its a high performance vehicle, its going to break no matter what". thats what the tranny guy told me when my tranny went after 600 miles after he installed a new one. lost 3rd and 4th gear and burnt up the clutch plates because they forgot to attach the kick down cable. but they say it was my fault. fuck them mechanics. they are a bunch of crooks.

Bottom line is go beat on a $100,000 Ferrari like people beat on Mustangs and see how long they last.

ya, even the mechanic i work for says ferraris and exotics aint that much better than the cars available to the public, just the name gets ppl hyped about it, and keep the repairs quiet.
