Intake manifold gasket replacement?

Ok I have a 92 grand am with the 3.3 v6 and I have a leak in my intake manifold gasket. Its driving me nuts and my car will only run for about 15-20 mins until it hits normal operating temp and then shut down. Then I cant start it until its cooled down. I think since my intake manifold is leaking it is throwing the MAP sensor and making the car shut off the gas. How big of a pain is this to replace for a fairly confident mechanic such as myself? Is there anything that will give me a huge problem? Any other things that could be making my car do this? Should I replace the MAP sensor right away too?

If you are a confident mechanic you should have no problem replacing the manifold gasket. Simply drain the radiator, unhook the battery, disconnect the air cleaner, remove the assorted hoses attached to the manifold, the alternator and any other attachments. Remove anything that can get in your way including the throttle cable. Once everything is disconnected, don't forget to label the spark plug wires, loosen the bolts to the intake manifold. Pry one end of the manifold loose and remove. Place rags in the lifter galley and the intake ports to keep anything from falling into them. Clean off the old gasket material from both the heads and the manifold. Remove the black silicone material from the ends of the galley and replace with Black Silicone. This is usually included with the gasket kit. Allow to dry for about 20 minutes and reassemble by reversing the steps. Be sure to remove all the towels/rags from the ports and lifter galley before reassembly. Make sure to torque the manifold per the specs. Usually between 14 and 18 foot pounds. Once everything is connected fill the radiator and start the car to check for leaks. This is an abreviated version of what to do but will get you started. If you have a Chiltons or Haynes manual it will describe the process in detail. Good Luck!

Thanks that was the most lengthy reply I ever received on a board before. I will be getting into it next week and if I run into problems I will be reposting. Thanks I also jus tbought a Haynes so that should help.

Any special tools involved? Like to remove high pressure fule lines? It's to dang cold here for me even to look...14 below zero right now but when it warms up I'll be having great fun{LOL}.Looks like I better do the thermostat while there as it don't look like it's easy access.BTW...3.4,GT.Overall a good car so far but it's starting to be a pain.O ya don't forget to change the oil after doing this work as antifreeze is sure to get into the oil.4 u car buffs...any idea what flat rated at for time?
