Make sure the engine is getting fuel. After cranking the engine check for fuel in the fuel rail, there should be a shrader valve (looks like a tire valve) on one end of the rail and should be accessible near the intake manifold (i think the drivers side). Use a small screw driver and push in the center of the valve (like letting air out of a tire) but dont stand directly over it. Gas should spray out, if not you need to check power to the fuel pump if you have power to the fuel pump and still no gas its probably the pump. A great resource for do it your self repairs is alldataidy.com it cost $25 for the first year and $15 every year after that and you can add as many vehicles as you want for $15 each it is well worth the cost and blows away any repair manual you can buy in a store.

When you turn the key to the on position do you hear the fuel pump run for a couple of seconds?

no, i don't think so. i had my sister turn the key to on while i sat in the trunk and there was nothing. could it be the alarm or the fuel pump relay, maybe?

oh, i checked at the fuel filter too, there was no fuel pumped when the key was turned to on.

I'd check out the fuel pump relay, it should be the lower right relay on the main panel, hopefully it's just stuck & tapping it will get it going.

I purchased a 95 jetta that had this same problem among others I looked at everything already posted and no help with a little research and shooting from the hip it took me to the problem it was the ECU the battery went dead and when I recharged it it must have fryed it. I jumpered the pump to make sure I had pressure and checked the fuel pump relay it was good then when I checked the injectors for power their was non and the ECU controls the injectors

i finally got the car running. i replaced the fuel pump, but the battery had lost it's charge. i would like to know more about your ecu problem, because i was having problems (strange quirky things) before the car sat and when i got it running again, it's like it running on emergency lights. i lost everything but the basics. i had to remove a couple of relays. i am sure the ecu is shot, but i don't know exactly what to do and what caused this to happen.

thanks
niki

I just bought this car a few weeks ago and i am still working out other problems. Like when i start the car the day lights flash and the gauges are dead until i hit the gas and rev the engine then it all comes back. So i made a post and it was answered by boschmann to have the alternater ripple tested to see if a diode is bad. So i still need to do that but reading other peoples electrical problems thay have been answered to check the ignition switch by wiggleing it to see if the problem changes. This makes sence since the ignition seems to have been changed because their are 2 keys to the car and it could be a switch from a junk yard and could have the same problem. So i will try that also. But if you think it is your ecu i got mine from a guy on ebay. If your part number dont match what he has listed email him thru ebay and give him your part number. He will list one with a buy now mine was $65 plus $10 shipping. He guarentees them for 30 days from the day you get it and they are tested before he sends them. He is out of PA. and has 100% feed back. I just typed in 95 vw jetta ecu. If you need to know more about what i did to correct my problems. I will be glad to let you know as i work my way thru them.
