Break-in period for new engine

Seriously, how important are the first 1000 miles in determining the rest of the life of the engine? The manual for the STi says: no racing the engine, no heavy accereration, no heavy braking, and try to avoid long periods of sustained speed for the frist 1000. Any comments? Its tough not trying out the car yet.

I know it can be torture, but I highly recommend breaking it in properly.

For the engine, it's pretty important. The brakes are less of an issue. The other thing that's not mentioned is that you don't wnat to have long extended runs at constant RPM to break the engine in (meaning don't run cruise control on at 70 mph in 6th gear for 300 miles straight).

Well if i cant push it, i can at least listen to the 6 disc cd changer they put in the new '05's. That was a nice surprise.

yeah..i hear ya...the car is great to listen to. You really feel like your in a racecar because you hear all the road sounds and feel every vibration, very different from a family truckster.

the break in is bs! I hit passed 4 r's many times when i got my rex...and it drives and rides like a dream..and I have about 5 grand into it. If you wanna pussy the car go ahead...but the STi and the wrx are meant to be driven and driven hard.

LOL listen to that --"break in is BS". Any person who knows about motors knows that a proper break in and not to mention a proper start and shut off, are critical to a motor's life. Here's something, buy a model car with a small engine. As soon as you bring it out of the box, run the bitch as hard as you can, and i can almost gaurantee you that it won't be in one piece at the end of the day. Same thing with every other motor.

And the guy advocating no break-in has a whopping 5,000 miles on his! Woohoo! Yeah, just lay off it for the first K, then when the odometer rolls over that fourth digit, heel-toe down into second, floor it, and giggle like a little kid. I drove my car everywhere I went for a week (Hey, you wanna come over and play some Need for Speed Underground? Sure! I'll just drive my car next door to your house!), made unneccesary trips to far away places (Let's go get some food. I heard there was a great place three towns over...), and took all of my friends for extended joyless rides (Well, the interior is cool and all, but why can't we go fast? I thought this was supposed to be a fast car.) until that 1,200 mile mark (the manual in the '04 WRX says 1,200 miles instead of 1K). Then I put the hammer down. 1198.... 1199.... 1200! ZOOOOOOOM!!!!! :grinno: Then, I found a parking lot to play in.

I just bought an 05 WRX wagon and the dealership had to get it from another city 100 miles away. It was probably driven at 70 the whole way.
Will this be a big deal in the break in period, considering the 'no constant speed' warning?

Probably not, considering that 100 miles is only 1/10 of the break in distance.

Breaking in your engine will not make it a pussy as speedphreak says... because I bet your car that you broke in would outlast his ride and out run his ride for years to come... so either pussy your car in the beginning... or... rag the living shyt out of the car and have a pussy engine in the end... your choice...

dannys right im still a kid i dont drive yet but i own a gas r/c car and i got a new engine about two months ago and i wanted to just fang it down the road so i did..... :nono: .......and as a result the spark plug got fried then it went out of tune and started to lag wen i tried to floor it and just about 1 week ago the car was running how it really was suposed too. so thats what happens if u dont run in ur engine properly
besides I THINK that what they'retrying to say is to baby the car until 1,200 miles not baby it for ever (not too sure if thats what they meant :dunno: )
