cam ?

My Son Bought a 1987 Supra 7MGE with a BHG (UHHAA!!!). I have read many of the posts and read the web sites pertaining to BHGs.

After taking the head off and realizeing the head needs resurfaced we took the cams out and found 3 journals on the intake cam and 2 journals on the exaust cam that had been sevearly scored. Is this a common problem with these motors?
The heads I found at the salvage yards had the same problems. I called some parts stores and got prices of $175.00 Per cam for stock cams.

I dont mean to offend anyone but there aint no way I'm paying $350.00 for a pair of stock cams, Thats just F______ stupid!

I have found felpro Head Gaskest for $37.00. Sence I'm not doing anything to the block I think the felpro will seal better than the steel gaskets.

Any Ideas on why the cam journals got scored and what I need to do to prevent it from happing again?
One last question, Where is the relay for the small electric fan on the radiator? The fan works when I hot wire it so I know the fan is good. It just wont come on when the A/C is on like it's supposed to.

the small fan beside the viscous? isn't that the overheating fan, the a/c fan is the one on the front of the radiator i'm pretty sure
also the only thing i can think of with your cams is that some contaminated oil or the oil cap was left off or some dust got in there, something to that effect and got cleaned up in the cam which scoured it... also getting hot can cause some scour marks..
anyone else?
