Installing a K&N Air Filter

Hi all....ok I need a little advise here. I purchased a K&N Air Filter for my 2001 Nissan Sentra SE. I had a dificult time opening the air box to install the filter and was concerned I might damage the electrical cable connected to the air box hose so I disconnected it. I replaced the original filter with the K&N, however I was an idiot and neglected to reconnect the air box electrical connector before I started the car. I received a Service Engine Soon warning light when I started the vehicle and decided to turn off the vehicle to double check what I did. That's when I noticed the electrical connector disconnected and reconnected it. The vehicle seems to be operating with no trouble at all, however the Service Engine Soon light remains on and I'm hoping I haven't damaged anything. I understand that the steady light indicates a possible problem with the emmisions system, but it would be obvious this light would turn on if the vehicle suspected a problem with the electrical contact to the air box. Of course, I could take the vehicle in to get a diagnostic which more then likely would determine nothing is wrong and reset the light for a fee I don't want to pay. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks...

Nothing is wrong with your car at all...there are 2 things you can do....1. you can just ignore it and eventually it'll go off,,,or you can dissconnect the negative battery terminal overnight to reset the ECU(computer).....

Thanks...Didn't think there was anything wrong with the car. I feel like such an idiot in not being able to replace an air filter with out messin' things up...Do you really think the light will eventually go out or should I just do the battery disconnect?

Yeah if you re-connected everything it should reset itself just by driving around a bit......So I'd say just wait and let it shut itself off by itself.

would resetting the ECU reset EVERYTHING? like the odometer and history (time/date of when you hit the rev limiter, etc.) files?

But no it shouldn't reset all that...it's kinda like when you shut your computer down illegaly then turn your computer back on it fixes what was wrong but it still has a memory of what was stored in it....See what I'm trying to get at? I hope so cause it's making me go:bloated: :D

yo gene, whatup man.... :smoka:

damn, i thought i could get a fresh start and pretend i didn't put almost 17k miles on my sentra in about 5 months....hahaha

how's the new se-r treatin ya?

question about cone filters: you already know i'm getting the HS CAI, which comes with their own 3" cone filter. i'm guessing they're washable, but i've seen replacement cone filters from APC for about $20 at autozone. then there's the k&n cone filters, and last but not least, the POP charger. what's the best thing to stick at the end of a CAI? i know the pop chargers are a little more expensive than your average cone filter, but some people are doing it. just wondering what you thought about it. you know, it still hasn't come in, but that shouldn't be a surprise.

The Se-R's treating me good,,,I actually am heading down to Middletown today to register it...:D
But I wouldn't bother putting a bigger cone filter on the end of the CAI,,,especially if you consider the price and the gain,,it's totaly not worth it...Yeah some people say that if you stick a pop-cone from like a pop-charger you can gain some air flow by velocity stacking but, like I said the gain is very minimal....The filter that comes with the HotShot CAI should be more than sufficient...So save your cash and buy a UR pulley instead :D

But I'm still thinking about shaving the lines of the front of the B15 and intergrating the Stillen front spoiler to be allone piece.....

your 'daily' driving is harder than my 'spirited' driving. :p i think i'm gonna get the stillen lip if i can talk them down.....a lot. i can't believe how much that little thing has grown on me since i started running out of mods.

just to keep this on topic:::

have people just stuck cone filters on their MAF? i know the pop chargers (at least the one on Marc's car) is HUGE, a lot bigger than the cone filters i've seen on short ram/cold air intake systems. would regular 3" cone filters on the MAF do anything? those things are pretty cheap, so i wonder why people would get a ~$200 pop charger when they're both basically the same thing.

i know it's an old topic, but is there really any advantage to using the drop-in filters other than not having to buy new ones?

depending on how well the hotshot group buy turns out (whenever that is), i may have to start looking into other intake options. :frog:

Well, I decided not to disconnect my battery to clear the light and it cleared this morning. It's been about 500 miles since I had the light come on so that must be the distance to travel before the light will clear. No ill-effects with my Sentra. Thanks for all your advise folks.
